THE SCHREIBER NEWS April 21, 1966 COMMUNITY CENTRE BY-LAW GIVEN READINGS Reeve Harness and full Countil attended the regu- lar meeting of Schreiber Town Council on April 13 when the By-Law for a Schreiber Community Centre was giv en the necessary three readings. The board for this will have seven members and will include two councillors and one woman. An agreement for mutual assistance in emergency fire fighting was signed with the understanding that fire hose and men are the aids to be given by Schrei- ber. Orders for such assistance will come from the Fort William fire chief. Schreiber and Terrace Bay will continue their verbal agreement which has been most satisfactory during the past. After some discussion it was agreed that since practically all organized charitable organizations regularly canvass the town Council for this year would not give grants to any cause since ratepayers are already contributing privately. The Navy League were granted permission to can- vass on May 14. Mrs.L.R.McCuaig was appointed chairman for the Schreiber Centennial celebrations and Councillor R.B.Spadoni named to represent the town on the committee. With some disagreement on the need for three homes for the aged in the district it was decided to send representation to the meeting which will con- sider the problem. Insurance on the local Arena will be increased to $50,000 on the building and $45,000 on the con- tents. No tenders were received from local agents one stating that, in view of th e fire hazard existing in such a public building, a special survey would have to be made before rates could be presented. In the meantime the present coverage will be main- tained. R.B.Simon was awarded the insurance on town vehicles. The Centennial grant to aid with the artificial ice plant was applied for. Edward Borutski was appointed road superinten- dent for the town at a salary of $5,672. The East Thunder Bay T.B.Association was granted use of the hall during the mass survey April 27 - May 2. A request from the high school board for a sidewalk in front of the school was tabled for further discus- sion. Carl LeBlanc was present to ask that space in the Town Hall be given to a Men's Club--not a senior citizens' association. No decision was reached since various agreements will have to be made. A meeting with the Library board will be arranged to persuade them to move to another location in the § town hall. 4 Continued SLIGHT INCREASE IN MILL RATE THIS YEAR Separate School supports will be hardest hit by this year's tax increases as their total residential rates rose by 5.36 mills and commercial rates by 5.47. Total Public School residential rates in- creased by 2.50 mills and commercial rates by 2.28 mills. A breakdown of the new tax rate structure is as follows:- General rate, residential 45.41 - General rate, commercial 48.92 - Public School residential 21 .1| and Public School Commercial 23.44. Separate School Residential 23.97 and Separate School Commercial 26.63. High school residential is 30.57 and High School commercial is 33.97. VETS HONORED AT LEGION VIMY NIGHT Guests of honor at the Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Night in Schreiber were R.C Riley, G.A. Cataford, W.J.Thrower, George Singleton, J. E.Gagnon (Nipigon), Hugh Stewart, W.W.Wilkes, T.M.Bolan, J.J.Ford, Edward Nicol and Nelson Smith. The old veterans were, as is the custom, escor- ted by car to and from the party and provided with batmen for the evening. Nine who have previously attended this festive event were prevented for various reasons from attending this year. David Gunter was M.C.for the occasion and during the evening Burton Phillips showed two films on curling and fishing. GORDIE HOWE IN SCHREIBER JULY 8TH Reg .Bailey, president of the Minor Hockey As- sociation, has received confirmation that Gordie Howe of the Detroit Redwings will be in Schreiber on July 8th. The occasion will be held in the rink at 10.30 in the morning. The names of Ted and Harry Priske, ex-Navy personnel, were omitted from those in Schreiber on pension after full-time service in the Armed Forces. Their brother Bob went down with HMCS St. Croix and another brother, Ken, was lost with the RCAF.
