BACKS RE-UNION CENTENNIAL PROJECT Schreiber Women's Institute answered roll call at their March meeting with tea bags for the social convenor and personally designed St. Patrick novel- ties, both attractive and ingenious. Motto for the meeting was "After a good dinner one can forgive anyone--even one's relations." Mrs.Harvey Stevenson and Mrs.Keith Nesbitt were welcomed as guests by vice-president Mrs.J.C. Campbell who chaired the meeting. Mrs. Tommy Whitton reported on the meeting for Schreiber centennial celebration and it was moved to adopt th e Old Home Re-Union project. Mrs. Nelson Smith gave a paper on recent local events and Mrs.Alvin Slater presented annual reports to be studied by the various standing convenors. Mrs. Wesley Clemen's paper on Education and Citizen- ship contained the following points:- that education is recognized as the key to a fuller life; in under- developed countries a continuous war is being waged against illiteracy; even in Canada a problem exists in providing educational opportunities for all persons at all levels. In part the latter is being solved by increased enrolment in high schools and universities--adult education programs, refresher courses and language classes for immigrants. About 95% of Canadian children attend schools built and operated by Government. These children pay no fees--the cost of their education being borne by local taxes and by provincial grants. The remaining 5% attend private schools where fees are paid or Indian and Eskimo Schools and the schools overseas attended by children of Canadian Servicemen.. At- tendance at all levels of education has expanded tremendously. In Lakehead University alone it is expe oted that enrolment will triple to 2,000 by 1970. There was some discussion on selling Almey crab- apple trees, the Centennial tree, but no decision was made. Mrs.Whitton displayed an ancient Irish coin and mug, family heirlooms, and two small shoes, which were later used as the tea table centrepiece. Mrs. Ken Williamson managed a penny auction at the close of the meeting. April roll call is to be answered with cards for the Sick convenor's use. Miss Marilyn Pearson of Winnipeg is visiting her parents, Mr.and Mrs.Charles Pearson. Mrs .Steve Petrushack will spent the next two weeks in Fort William taking medical treatment.
