2 Vol .9, No.6 The first Terrace Bay Snow Festival was launched Friday when speed skating races were held for boys and girls of all ages at 3:30 pm. A large crowd attended the week- end event. In the evening a challenge broomball game was held in the arena with the high school teaching staff tak- ing on the combined team of the separate and public school teachers. The _ elementary teachers were the victors. The second game of the evening was ga ladies broomball game against the Imperial Bank gals with a rematch game in the making as The Gals claim they were "gyped".. A good crowd was on hand to cheer them on. A father and son -bantam hockey game was held with some of the oldsters taking part; Geo. Dashkewytch, Les- ter Legault, Beggie Thorstein- son, Marius Papineau, Jerry Papousek, Lionel Waghorn, G.- Pinkerton and more. The fathers came out on top. An exhibition figure skating performance was given by the members of the Terrace Bay Figure Skating club. A solo was given by Cheryl Duncan, a duet by Jane and Judy Chopty, a solo by Elizabeth Hayes and a solo by Norma Phillips only seven years old. One group number (The Go- Go-Girls) gave a performance also. Jammie and Pamela Cumming did a dance number together. BARREL JUMPING A demonstration of barrel jumping was given by three local boys, Lloyd Phillips, Bob Robinson and Mike Mallais. These boys jumped over 11 barrels. In conjunction -- with the barrel jumping a spec- tacular and death defying stunt was demonstrated by these boys in the jump of fire, to close off the Friday even- ing program. Door prizes were given out during the evening to lucky ticket holders. A Muk-Luk Mardis Gras dance was held in the high school auditorium with King James and the Axemen and the North Shore Polka Kings, featuring Chuck Levigne who provided a good variety of music throughout the evening. Both adults and teenagers took part in this social enter- tainment. Saturday bowling was held during the day featuring mother and daughter, father and son, and husband and wife tournament. The best two game total score in each division earned special prizes. A jun- ior eurler bonspiel got under- way Saturday morning and a wind-up banquet was held in the curling lounge with the winners being decided Sun- day afternoon. Serving the District Gem of the No.Shore - Winning Sculpture The adult study lounge was opened throughout the week- end featuring a large display of paintings by our local talent- eG arts people. PARADE OF FLOATS Saturday afternoon the par- ade of floats was held start- ing in front of the high school, then to Simcoe Flaza where the judging took place. Four- teen floats took part includ- ing the 65 members of the Sea Cadet Band from the Lake- head and the local Sea Cadets and Wrenettes and Majorettes. The winners were announced at the hockey game that night. First place was the Kiwanis float which featured the Easter Seal Campaign and used 40,000 pieces of Kleenex Second prize went to the Boy Scout float, and third prize to the Horticultural Society. Hon- orable mention went to Kim- berly-Clark, Catholic Womens' League and the _ Seperate School. Judges for this event were Mrs. A. Beaulieu, Ter- race Bay, and Mrs. Brodhurst, Terrace Bay, and W. Wood- row, Schreiber. The Kiwan- jians asked that the prize money be donated to the Easter Campaign, A lot of work was involved and the people that took part are to be commended for their fine ef- fort. Lohr and Miss Jennifer Wil- kins, talented professional fig- ure skater from the Lakehead, gave a performance. The feature event of the evening was the heckey game between Lakehead. Pros and the. Terrace Bay Superiors featuring most of the players who 'played on the team that won the Western Finalists in 1960-61. The game was hard played with the Sups the vic- tors by a 6 to 4 score. Between the second and third period the beard contest was judged by Jerry Isher- wood, Marion Vickruck and D. Earle from Marathon with the grand prize winner being Lauri Niiranen; 2nd K. Wood; third Ivan Cocks and fourth Wayne Daly. SNOW QUEEN Final event of the evening took place after the game when the coronation of the Snow Festival Queen took place. Lloyd Phillips Teen- Town president announced the winner, Alice Jean McKechnie. The princesses are Joanre Brown, Elizabeth Hayes, Judy McInnes and Norma Chesley. The Lakehead Sea Cadet Band formed a guard of honor as the contestants were driven in the arena in a small con- vertible decorated with flow- ers.. The Terrace Bay Major- ettes also formed a guard of honor. These girls are trained by Janice McInnes. The queen was crowned by the reeve of Terrace Bay, W. Adamo. A snow festival dance was held in the high school audi- torium for teenagers and visit- ing. curlers. Music was sup- plied by King James and the Axemen. Another dance was held at the Moose Hall the Same evening and also a re- ception for the Lakehead NHL pros and Terrace Bay Super- iors and their escorts. Music was provided by the North Shore Polka Kings. VARIED EVENTS Snowshoe races for boys and girls, ladies and men were held Sunday afternoon in the Athle- tic Ball Park. The mayors and reeves snow- s hoe race held in the ball field on a 100 yard track was won by Acting Mayor Edgar La- prade of Port Arthur. The ladies. cross - country 'Snowshoe race was won by Mrs. R. Salesse 'and second Pat Mikus. The mens' cross country snowshoe race was won by Graham Coe. The log lifting contest was won by John Dio- vany of ZenMac Mines. Art Garneau of Jackfish was the winner of the log sawing and log splitting contest with Mrs. L. Desaulniers won for the Continued page 10.
