A relatively new group "The Axemen" first appeared at the Terrace Bay Band-O-Rama, sport- ing beat-up guitars and borrowed drums. Their lead guitarist won the 'best instrumentalist' award. Since then the group, equipped with the best, has been playing for many dances in N'western ° Ontario communities, occasionally accompanied by recording artist Cosmo Filane. Bruce (King James) Young, classical pianist turned bass guitarist, with Dave Mercier, lead guitarist, do the arranging for the group and, to- gether with Frankie (Drums), Andy (Sax), and Kevin (rythm guitar), make the Axemen "THE" sound on the North Shore. Now the word is that the boys have been offered a recording contract to release a single in the spring While the details of their release are pending the Axemen will continue bringing the big sound to this area. Two Schreiber teams played two games each against our PeeWee hockey teams and the Manitouwadge Bantams played weekend games with the local Bantam Club and the Schreiber Bantams. The turnout of parents was very disappointing, not only to the Terrace Bay Minor Hockey execu- tive, but to their own sons who played. Comments | have been heard that a better turnout would have been realized had the games been scheduled for evening but the important factor is that this Minor Hockey Day is not staged for the benefit of th e parents but rather for the players and it is impos- sible to stage all these games in the evening. Some people were critical of the programme but little did they realize that the Minor Hockey Assoc. executive are just ordinary people who are devoted to the promotion of minor hockey. They have vol- unteered their time and efforts and receive little reward in the form of praise, and once a year they ask for the support of the pa rents in attending this Minor Hockey Day, only to receive a poor turnout and criticism. The slogan for Minor Hockey Week is "Don't SEND - TAKE your boy to the Arena" and this fell by the wayside. Terrace Bay Minor Hockey Assoc. president Joe Adamo, plus the many other coaches, referees and executive members, are not doing all this work to bolster their own ego or take the praise of saying how many of their teams have won. The principles of this Association are:- |. They have an interest in boys--they are trying to give each and every boy an opportunity to play hockey--they are trying to develop better citizens- they are trying to teach the boys the fundamentals of good sportsmanship, 2. They try to provide enjoyment of hockey, rather than stressing the idea of championships or winning games. Once again, Joe Adamo took over as Minor Hoc- key president when minor hockey was at a low ebb and without a president, and he has worked hard to revive the minor hockey programme. The 'young hockey players have given him the initiative to teach them to play, but as parents we are failing him in our support. | (Cont'd page |3.)
