Vol .8, No.47 row Slower Kills Tot. The headline above was in a recent edition of a Winnipeg paper and the write-up follows:- "Five-year old Karen DeFosse of suburban Fort Garry was killed Tuesday when she was hauled in by a large snow bl ower and slashed by its blades. The driver of the municipal equipment, Verne Frantz, 27, also of Fort Garry, was unaware of the accident until police found him an hour later. About seven inches of snow fell in the Greater Winnipeg area since Sunday and municipal forces were working throughout the day to clear streets for traffic. Police said the girl was apparently playing in snow banks about two blocks from her home when the snow blower went by and hauled her in." We print this to point up that an accident very similar to this could happen in Terrace Bay. Par- ents are urged to watch their little children when they are playing outside and particularly when the snow blower is on your street or in the area. HIGHSCHOOL PLANS EXPLAINED Last Thursday night the Terrace Bay High School Board conducted a well planned and very well at- tended meeting at the High School to present their plans for an ambitious extension both to the curri- culum and existing facilities. Board Chairman A.Chisholm opened the meeting and introduced W.Farrell who explained that, in addition to the existing four years of a five year pre-university course, a four year diploma course designed to prepare students for training in various phases of industry will be offered. Plans also in- clude a two year and perhaps a one year, course designed to prepare students to take their places in society in other capacities. Mr .Farrell made comparisons with points in Northern Ontario such as Kirkland Lake, Kapus- kasing, Timmins, etc. and Mr.Chisholm, replying to a question regarding a town of this size offering sucha program, made Dryden a comparable point. The question asked was if other towns the same size as Terrace Bay are offering similar programs. No reference was made to comparable centres such as Nipigon, Geraldton, Schreiber, Marathon or Wawa. If we in Terrace Bay are going to provide such courses not offered in other small towns and are going to have a 450 thousand dollar high school shouldn't we do a little flag waving? Since eight nomina- tions were made it is evident that only two of them were spectators. We realized last year that an apathy towards civic affairs was developing in Terrace Bay but that the malady would progress to such an extent came as a surprise, at least to some. This apathy is, this year, costing the taxpayers some money--for legal advice on what steps to take next--and possibly for two elections. This has a familiar sound doesn't it, when we have all been decrying a Federal election that didn't re- solve much yet cost the country a lot of money. Nominations for Reeve were brisk--to a point-- when the names of Wm.Adamo and Verl Thompson appeared on the board. There it stopped but at least an election for this position was assured. Jack Lang and Barry Stephen automatically became the new members of the Public School Board when no other nominations were made. The lack of interest really hurt when it came to nominating only four people as candidates for Council. The names of W.Kurylo, Verl Thompson and Ken MacLeod (High School Teacher) appeared and there nominations stopped. When questioned as closing time approached the Town Clerk said that he could go beyond the stipulated time to see if another nomination came in. Finally, some of those present persuaded E.S.Brown to let his name stand. This left it up to Verl Thompson to choose in which category he would stay. If he withdrew from the race for Reeve the whole slate would go in by acclamation. He chose to withdraw as a candidate for Council. On Tuesday the solicitor in Toronto was contac- ted and he advised that the three nominees for Council could be declared in by acclamation, that another nomination night should be called and another election held later for the fourth mem- ber of council. At this nominees MacLeod and Brown declared themselves unwilling to qualify. They want to see an election. The next step is right in the laps of YOU and YOU and YOU. Don't let yourselves and your town down. Make it a point to know and remem- ber when the next nomination meeting (and all future nomination meetings) will be held--have responsible candidates ready for nomination and get down and nominate them.
