INDIVIDUALISM - By Debora Stewart - Grade 11 God made every man equal, but no man the same. Each of us is an individual, unlike any other man, a unique design in the pattern of the world. Indi- viduality necessitates a knowledge of what you be- lieve to be right and the desire to remain firm in your convictions at the expense of being different. It is not, as it is sometimes believed, the act of being different. Each man has been placed upon the earth to improve the whole society of man by "his individual actions. Courage is essential when those beliefs contradict the present society. The individual nature of man is made manifest in his personality. It is the dramatic singularness which explains a man and distinguishes him from all other people. That character must be directed toward moral perfection, the ultimate goal which if it is not sought to the highest degree detracts from that very individualism and makes him base. A man must first realize what he is then he must build on that which he posses and thus attain perfection. It is not essential that a person does all that he wants but that he wants all that he does. However, though each person must seek salvation alone, though he must discover for himself who he is and what his purpose for living is, man lives in a society of other men, each an individual like him- self. We must first learn self-respect, then respect of our fellow man in order to harmonize with others of our species.
