November 4, 1965 LEGION FISH DERBY NIGHT OBSERVED Gino Caccamo was MC for the Royal Canadian Legion, Br.109, fish derby night on Saturday. After welcoming the crowd Gino added a witty commen- tary on some of the fishing outings during the summer and on the habits peculiar to fishermen in describ- ing a catch. He also stated the Legion are most grateful to Labbatt Company who provided all the prizes in each event--gold embossed trays, steins and sportsman lanterns, extending the regrets of Fred Smith who was unable to attend to present the gifts. There were trophies for each species of fish and individual cups to be kept by the winners. The Edson Morrill trophy for speckled trout was won by Rene Bedard-3 Ib.10 oz. Second prize went to Jack Handel and third prize to Hobden Spikula. The Ed Cobey trophy for lake trout was won by John Stitt-6 Ibs.2 oz and second prize went to Romeo Parent and third prize to Rene Bedard. The Lakehead Freightways trophy for northern pike was won by Peter Doig with 7 lb.s 9 oz. Wal- ter Zaporzan received second prize and third prize. The Tony Caccamo trophy for largest pickerel was won by Peter Doig - 5 Ibs. 4 oz. and second prize went to Walter Zaporzan. A rainbow trout prize went to Jerry LeSauvage and a case of Imperial Oil, donated by Burton Phillips for largest lake trout was presented to John Stitt. Music for the evening was provided by Tom Gerow Richard Levigne and Ron Stewart of Terrace Bay and a bingo dance, involving everyone, put the crowd in a gala mood. FIREMEN'S MASQUERADE BALL HUGH SUCCESS The Hallowe'en masquerade ball given by the Fire Brigade was again an enormous success although not as many were in costume as in other years. The judges, however, had a difficult time before award- ing the first prize to Mrs.Arnold O'Keefe and Mrs. Ray Cook (snowmen) -$25.00 - Mrs.Michael Smilsky and Mrs.Rob Jones as roosters (15.00) and Mrs.Earl Holmes, Mrs.Jim Gray and Mrs.Harry Costall as the Mad Hatters - $10. The judges were Mrs. Eddy Nesbitt, Ray Cote, Bruce Simon, Alf Bull and Orville Sainsbury. The door prize of $50 was won by Dominic Pella- grino and the spot dance prize of $5 by Mary Mc- Grath and Lenore O'Brien. Hilarious laughs follow- ed the wake of the gory figure pierced by three arrows who defended himself from attack with a cap pistol generously filled with ammunition. OLD TIMER HONOURED ON DEPARTURE The Evening Group of St.John's Anglican Church met in the home of Mrs..Richard Spicer, one of their oldest members, to give her a surprise fare- well party: Mrs.Spicer, who came to Schreiber from England as a bride fifty-four years ago, is leaving to make her home in Fort William. Mrs .Jack Corbett pinned a corsage on Mrs.Spicer and, on behalf of the members, Mrs.Geoff Birch, the president, gave Mrs.Spicer a clock. Attend- ing the party were Mesdames Cyril Sparkes, Alvin Slater, Ralph Morrill, George Birch, Ted Wilson, - Polly Bottomley and J.D.Bryson. Mrs. Spicer, affectionately called "Aunt Susie" by everyone, was also honored at a party held in the home of Mrs.Forbes Macadam, with Mrs .Russell Macadam assisting. Over forty old friends contri- buted to two particular gifts presented on this occasion--a cosy winter housecoat and another, humorously referred to as 'putting all our eggs in one b asket'=-really a small basket filled with bills rolled into the shape of eggs. These were presented by the hostesses on behalf of the others. On behalf of the Ruby Rebekah Lodge in which Mrs. Spicer is a Past Noble Grand, Mrs.Tom Bryant presented a gift. Mrs.Spicer was originally a mem- ber of Greenstone Rebekah Lodge but transferred many years ago to Ruby. -She also received indivi- dual gifts from other friends. LOCAL KINSMEN ATTEND ZONE MEETING Four members of the Kinsmen Club of Schreiber attended the Zone Meeting of Kinsmen Clubs in this area held in Port Arthur on October 3lst. Local delegates to the meeting were the president, Peter Speziale, Tony Speziale, Jim Figliomeni and Ray Guillet.
