ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT HELD Awards, crests and trophies were given to Terrace Bay children Friday evening as another very active swimming and playground program was concluded. Recreation Director Buck Matiowsky welcomed the parents and friends who crowded into the Arena for the colorful evening, and inviting all to inspect the many displays of arts and crafts created by those attending playground. The Playground Tota gave the general opening following 'O Canada'. Buck introduced his swimming staff of Doug Croin,, Molly Harris, Marcia Hamilton, Gordon Moorey, Arlene Coates and congratulated Brian Care the Instructor of Fergus, Ontario, for a very successful first year in Terrace Bay. Two volunteers Norma Chesley and Terry Delaronde rounded out the staff and assisted in the presentaion of swimming awards. Norma Chesley was declared the Girls Swimming Champion with eight firsts and one second and Bob McMillan the Boys Champion with seven firsts and two seconds. One hundred and forty crests were presented by the swim- ming staff to thirty-eight swimmers who had placed in local or district swim meets. Instructors presented thirty-two crests to those passing the Tadpoles or first test, thirty crests to the next class - the Minnows and eighteen to those passing the Frogs, Advancing to the Red Cross Water Safety Beginners, twenty -two received their certificates and crests; twenty-six were successful in passing the Red Cross Junior Swimmers, thirteen their Intermediate Red Cross and eight Senior Red Cross. Lynn Simmer George Dashkewytch, Albert Cadieux, and Lois Ann Fraser received their Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Medallions and Claire Belliveau, Terry Delaronde and Norma Chesley were awarded their bars to the Bronze Medallions. Turning next to members of the playground, some of the lads displayed exercises to music as practiced . throughout the summer months. A new group, just recently organized, was an attractive group of major- ettes featuring Brooke Rapke as Drum Majorette. Schritt B. Chapman, D. Chapman, J. Chopty, G. Kujbida, L. Belliveau, J. Chopty, K. Gorman and G.Fedorak Playground Supervisor J. McInnes presented prizes to the four children who had been selected as outstanding in their participation and achievements during the summer. These were J. Rajotte and P. Schritt Junior Girl and Boy and K. Zwaresh and L. Legault Senior. Buck had the pleasure of awarding the Minor Base- ball Champions their crests. These went to the Yan- kees coached by G. Sue in the American League, the Astros coached by S. Hamilton in the National League } and the Regals coached by H. Hermes and M. Evan- Smith in the Bantam League. In the Girls' Junior League the Slate Islanders were declared Champions and the Bisonettes were winners in the Primary League Crests were also presented to the Girls' North Shore Champions. The prized Tommy Duriex Award was presented this year by Mr. Henry Duriez to Jim Shivas, selected by instructors and staff for his contribution, attitude and achievements to the swimming program this summer . The Playground Tots returned to the spotlight to give the 'Sleepy Town Express' and the entire play- ground group took part in the farewell closing.
