1HE News CANOE TRIP (Continued from front page) garnered from years of trapping there. Mr.Cote gave them a handrawn sketch of the well-named Drowning River, urging them to ignore appearance of the water and portage certain small stretches he had marked. At one point they were tempted to disregard his ad- vice but saw the wisdom in following it when they sighted a wrecked canoe. They made two camps on this river and from it followed the Kenogami River then the Albany River to their destination. It was a 650 mile canoe trip, made in their own time, with camps where fishing was good, in eight unforgettable weeks. They estimate that on the thirty portages, each covered seven times, they must have covered 100 miles. A reconnoitering trip pre- ceded trips to pack canoe and supplies. The fish they never tired of--fried, baked, boiled and even successfully smoked, but they agree the the culinary masterpiece of the journey was Ben's deep dish apple pie--made from dried apples with a bannock crust of bacon grease and flour, rolled out on a paddle blade and baked in a deep pot over hot coals. Ben's home is in Starbuck, Minnesota and Bill's in Gillet, Wisconsin. On their return to Schreiber by plane and train, the two paddlers were entertained by Mr.and Mrs .St. Jean and their exploits described to interested friends HOLY ANGELS CHURCH SCENE OF WEDDING ~~ Pastel hued gladiolus adorned Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church on August 2I for the wedding of Rosa Marie Speziale, daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Vin- cenzo Speziale of Schreiber and Gary John Speck of Schreiber, son of Mr.and Mrs.Jack Speck of Geraldton.
