Vol .8, No.7 RECREATION BUDGET COMPARISONS MADE BY TOWNSHIP COUNCIL The appointment of a territorial district assessor is presently being investigated and Reeve Adamo and the Terrace Bay Town Council were advised at their Tuesday meeting to await the findings before making a local commitment. Representatives from Nipigon, Geraldton, Schreiber and Terrace Bay will meet to determine the situation. Councillor Thompson, reporting for the Recreation Committee, stated they were still looking for a new Director though selections had been chosen for inter- views. Following the Reeve's directions to make a comparison of costs of neighboring recreation pro- grams, Councillor Thompson presented the commit- tees figures, acquired tvo years ago when, as a Councillor, Reeve Adamo had first requested them. Based on statements from 1960, all of which have increased proportionately, recreation was costing $82,000 in Marathon, $61,000 in Red Rock and $48,000 in Terrace Bay. Reeve Adamo stated he wished a general review of programming rather than just the straight financial picture and suggested it could still b e done following installation of a Direc tor. The Town Solicitor advised Council that the policy regarding a Fourth Division Court has been not to set up another court when another one is as closely located as Schreiber . In refusing a bid to keep a duplex for municipal employees, Kimberly-Clark outlined their Company policy on housing. It is evident that Council must provide accommodations by other means and they discussed at length their previous investigations. Notice was also given by D.Boudreau that the Hydro truck and maintainence equipment could not be stored another winter in its present location which indicated a long range look at accommoda- tions and financing. Councillor Thompson sug- gested the need for a planner who would present a reasonable method of building suitable accommoda- tions to house the Fire Department, the Police Department (with cells) and also apartments. would release the Fire Department garage and office presently located in the Hydro Utilities Building. The annual Fire Report by Chief Hofland provoked the ire of Council who immediately requested Councillor Kolody to advise the Fire Chief to have returned all copies of the unapproved report. Council contends as erroneous the statement that -- no provision was given for programming and public relations work, though admitting the allotment had been cut with a view to maintaining the fire budget rather than the winning of plaques. Flown to Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital by the Terrace Bay Kiwanis Club Incorporated, Heather underwent surgery last Tuesday, February 9th. An artery was taken from her arm and grafted to her heart to correct a congenital heart abnormality. Mrs.June Smith, remaining in Toronto with her baby, relayed the success of the operation and, after a precarious few days, reported Saturday on her improved condition. MUNICIPAL UTILITY GROUPS PLAN TORONTO CONVENTION Ontario's electrical future will highlight discus- sions at the 56th joint annual meeting of the Ontario Municipal Electric Association and the Association of Municipal Electrical Utilities (of Gatecto)s in Toronto March | - 3 this year. Mr. D.Boudreau and Councillor Carl Kolody of Terrace Bay will be among the delegates from more than 300 municipal electrical utilities across the province who will converge on the Royal York. Hotel for the th ree-day gathering. Featured speakers will be Dr.Carl S.W inters of New York City and Arnold Edinborough, noted Canadian publisher and literary authority. Special reports on the operations of the province- wide Hydro organization will feature addresses by Ontario Hydro Chairman W.Ross Strike, General Manager J.M.Hambley and Assistant General Mari- ager H.J.Sissons. Dr.D.K.Grant, Hydro's director of medical services will also speak on the subject "Have a Heart". In 1964, the Gross Provincial Product rose an es- timated $1.4 billion to $18.5 billion, the unemploy- ment ratio declined from 3.8 percent to 3.3 percent and total capital investment is estimated to have in- creased by $400 million, the largest year-to-year increase for eight years.
