CURLING CLUB NEWS Curling was at its best the last two weekends. On January 7th, we started our local Club Playoffs with four teams entering, each team playing six games. Eight of th ese twelve games were won with last rocks. The Olsen rink of T.Olsen, Skip, Ken Johnson, Third, Roddy Thompson, Second.and Ned West, Lead, came out the winners, with five wins and one defeat. They then represented Terrace Bay in the Zone 4 playdowns on January |5th and did a very good job, losing out in the final end when the Red Rock Skip came through with a very fine shot, taking out Olsen's perfect draw on the tee line. At the same time Marathon defeated Nipigon. Terrace Bay was the only team to defeat Marathon's rink. The Olsen team are to be congratulated on their fine curling. The spectator interest was very keen. This is very encouraging for the curlers participating as well as for future interest in Northwestern Curling in Terrace Bay. The Marathon Rink now will represent Zone 4 in British Consol Playdowns in Atikokan starting Jan. 28th. We wish them the Best of Luck! PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST The Knights of Columbus will again sponsor a Public Speaking Contest in which students from the High Schools of Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Mara- thon and Nipigon-Red Rock will compete. The affair will be held on January 29th at 8.00 P.M., in Terrace Bay High School auditorium and contestants will speak on topics of their choice. Everyone is invited to attend. T.B.H.S. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS For the last few weeks both the girls' and the boys' volleyball teams have spent long hours practising in anticipations of the tournament which was held on Saturday, January I6th. Under the supervision of Mr .Ferguson, the coach, Mr.Terpstra and Mr. Gauley, both teams, th e cheerleaders and a num- ber of spectators left by bus for Red Rock. The Terrace Bay girls played their first game against the Nip-Rock girls. As a result of their vigorous training program they easily defeated Nip-Rock and went on to defeat both Schreiber and Geraldton. These victories brought them into the finals where they competed with Nip-Rock for the title. Nip-Rock won the first game out of three but the Terrace girls exhibited exceptional spirit and won the last two which proved them to be the volleyball champions of the district. The members of the girls volleyball team are: Elaine Rajotte, Jill Crandlemire,-Cheryl Moore, Shirley Desrosier, Karen Moore, Judy McInnes, Janis McInnes, Linda Dakin, Connie Fawcett, Elizabeth Ojavee, Diane _ Campbell, Darlene Larson and Pat Simmer. These girls should be congratulated for the excellent job they did in representing Terrace Bay High School in the tournament. The boys played their first game against the Nip- THE NEWS January 21, 1965 Rock team. They lost their first game but quickly re- covered to defeat both Geraldton and Schreiber. As Oa result they also were in the finals where they com- peted with Nip-Rock and Geraldton. They won their first game against Nip-Rock but were defeated by Geraldton. Although they did not win the tournament they placed second and should be congratulated an the fine job they did in representing our school. The members of the boys' volleyball team are: David Falzetta, Peter Heenan, Jon MacDonald, Roger Rajotte, Allan Pineault, Jim Mikus and David Mercie Throughout the tournament the cheerleaders en- couraged both the boys and girls and contributed to the growth of school spirit. The members of the volley ball teams would like to extend their gratitude to Mr.Ferguson for the time and effort he contributed to make this all possible. Mr.& Mrs.Eugene Oulette will hold an open recep- tion January 30th in the Schreiber Guild Hall from 3 - 5 p.m., in honor of their daughter Nicole Marie whose marraige to Murray Douglas Campbell takes place that day at 11.00 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. MINOR HOCKEY NEWS (by E. Kettle) In Pee-Wee House League action on Saturday the Hawks edged the Bruins 4-3 and the Leafs dumped the Canadiens 5-0. Shivas led the Hawks with two goals with singles going to Hermes and Edmonds. Matuszak fired two goals for the Bruins and Bouchie added a single.. Dashkewytch and Papineau led the Leafs to Victory with two goals each and Hamilton scored the other Leaf goal. In Pee-Wee All Star action the locals were defeated by Schreiber 5-3. Webb scored three goals, leading Schreiber to victory and singles went to Martin and Figliomeni. Fisher, Legault and Turner scored for the home side. MRS SARA JONES HONORED BY AUXILIARY The Afternoon Group of the Ladies Auxiliary held a Pot Luck luncheon for their first meeting of the New Year in the Community Church, Monday. Mrs.Elsie Ostling led the Grace and a delightful variety was enjoyed by the twenty-five ladies and their guest, Rev.T.G.Husser. Highlight of the luncheon was the arrival of a birthday cake which surprised Mrs. Sarah Jones on her eighty-second birthday. A card and gift were pre- sented to Mrs. Jones with the good wishes of the mem- bers. Mrs.Eva Haughn had baked the cake. Chairman Mrs.Kay Graham received the annual re- ports at the meeting which followed and it was decide to collect used Christmas cards at the February meet- ing. Election of officers found both Mrs.Graham and the Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs.Lil Harris, returned to office for another term. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Guides and Brownies will hold their Annual Meeting on Monday, Jan.25th at 8 o'clock in the small meeting room of the Recrea- tion Centre. All interested ladies are invited to attend.
