Varied Cakes Record Life's Major Events Mrs. Jack Corbett might well be called the Queen of Hearts in Schreiber since few are the brides whose wedding cake has not been one of he1 confections. Not only are the cakes made for local customers, but for brides in the Lakehead, Van- couver, Toronto, the Maritimes, and one to England. 'Louie' as she is known to everyone in Schreiber, makes not only the traditional many- tiered wedding cakes, but equal- ly beautiful and luscious, the many small ones which grace tea tables and rival any pro- duced by professional caterers. Twice the first prize in the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition has been won by Louie's cakes. The changes m toppings for wedding cakes during the past 50 years are well recorded in pictures of Louie's cakes from SURP an imitation frosting form to plastic, and more recently, satin and other fabrics, and of course the real flower decoration which still remains the favorite of many. For those who cling to tradi- tion, the decoration used on mother's or grandmother's cake can be cleverly refurbished to do service again. During vacations, Mr. Corbett never is alarmed when his wife disanpears. He simply follows his nose to the nearest bakery where she will be found study- ing new designs in cakes. Louie's cakes form a delight- ful record in community life -- first the wedding cake, then christening cake, the various an- niversary cakes, and in recent years, new retirement cakes for the men of the railroad.
