REGIONAL LIBRARY DIRECTOR TALKS TO BOARD Members of the Public Library Board met with D.D. Sudan, regional director, and his assistant Alan Pepper after the recent bookmobile exchange. The visitors were welcomed by chairman H.M.Ermel after which Mr .Sudar spoke, outlining proposed im- provements in the present system for the benefit of small libraries within the northern erea and describing innovations which have already proved advantageous. Some of the suggestions would, he felt, be adopted-- a workshop for untrained librarians (the regional board contributing to expenses); visits, as requested, by Mr. Pepper, when he will advise and assist in setting up a simple but adequate indexing system; culling old vol- umes; other professional assistance requested. The board also feels strongly that more meetings should be arranged with local boards to develop better under- standing on existing problems and to deal with same. Mr. Sudar offered advise on administration and on how to reduce express charges on book orders. He also mentioned a proposed news letter or bulletin which will assist small libraries and, to some extent, form a bond between them, a most desirable factor in our widely scattered area. Mr .Pepper spoke briefly mentioning what he hoped to accomplish when the proposed revisions are institut- ed and arranged a tentative second meeting with the Board in August or September . Mr .Ermel expressed the local board's satisfaction in the meeting with the free exchange of opinions enjoyed and the value of the business suggestions made. PRESENTATIONS MADE AT LEGION MEETING The 'Old Sweats" of the first world war were enter- f ained by the Royal Canadian Legion, Br.109 on their annual Vimy Night. By common consent the crowd watched an N.H.L. playoff game. Following the game G.V.Coons, chairman of the event, presented tie clips embossed with the Legion crest to H.Stewart, G.Singleton, J.Ford, Ed.Nicol, W.Wilkes, N.Smith, W.Thower, T.Bolan, G.Cata- ford and G.Duncan. Clips were sent to absentees Bob Riley, Tom Whitton, "Sharkey' Scott, W.R. Black, L.Noonan and T.Wilson. In his remarks Comrade Coons quoted from the poem To The Fallen--"Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn" applying it to those who survived. Another highlight of the evening was the presenta- tion by Legion President J.L.Sawyer of the Royal Canadian Legion's "Meritorious Service Medal" to Comrade A.V.Pearson. The local club, organized in 1945, has made many worthwhile contributions to the betterment of the community, their bigger projects including presenta- tion of the first ambulance, an Isolette to the Terrace Bay Hospital (which is used by so many in Schreib er for emergency treatments) and an audiometer which is to be formally presented soon. SEPARATE SCHOOL P.T.A. MEETING R.T .Campbell presided for the April meeting of the Separate School Parent-Teachers' Association. The opening prayer was given by Rev .Sister Frances Joseph, followed by minutes by Mrs.D .McGuire and financial statement by Mrs.A.Bourguignon. It was decided to have Saturday, May 9th as Mary's Day, an event founded by a convert, to honour all mothers in Canada. Mr .Campbell urged all members to attend the May meeting when election of officers will take place. A motion to retain the present school uniform was passed It was decided to have the report of the recent P.T.A. convention in Toronto read at the next meeting.
