April 23, 1964 STUDENTS WIN POSTER AND ESSAY CONTESTS Elaine Shynkaryk, 3rd prize winner in the Essay Contest, Edward Zwaresh, Ist prize winner and Lor- raine Dobush, 2nd prize winner in the Grade II Divi- sion Poster Contest for Northwestern Ontario sponsored by the Federation of Anglers & Hunters are shown with Mr. G. Kydd, Pres. of the Terrace Bay Club, who made the awards. Mrs. J. O'Grady is the Grade II teacher, St.Martin's School. Winners were chosen from 250 teacher selected entries and over 300 essays. Jamie Cumming last week learned that her poster on conservation, entered in the annual contest at the Sportsman's Show in Fort William, had won the grand prize for the best poster submitted from any grade. Her prize will be a flight to Toronto by TCA for herself and a parent, in August. While in Toronto, accommod- ation will be provided and they will be guests at the Canadian National Exhibition. Spending money will be provided by the Kiwanis Club of Westfort, sponsors of the contest and of the Sportsman's Show . Pamela Cumming won first prize in the Grade VIII class, winning a Parker pen and pencil set. In another contest, sponsored by the Northwestern Ontario Conservation Federation, Zone One, Judy Ollen-Bittle has won second prize for an essay on conservation. In this contest also, Jamie Cumming has won a prize for a poster - the 2nd prize in the Grades V and VI.class. Both girls are students in Grade VI of the Public School) and were in competi- tion with pupils from elementary schools throughout Northwestern Ontario. Their prizes were books. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. E. Salésse on the passing of her father,Mr.Carl Brideau on April 9th in Kapuskasing. Mr. & Mrs. Salesse and Raymond had been called to Campbellton, N.B. owing to the illness of Mr. Salesse's mother, Mrs. J.Salesse, when word was received of their loss. The Local Association to Guides and Brownies will meet on Monday, April 27th, at the home of Mrs. A. Fraser at 8 o'clock. visit her mother. Wednesday . THE NEWS MRS. HAGEN FETED PRIOR TO DEPARTURE Mrs. Jack Hagen who leaves Schreiber with her husband and son to make a new home in Virden,Man. was honored at a social evening held by friends in Mrs. Forbes Macadam's home. Mrs. Hagen has been an active worker in the United Church Women's groups and Ruby Rebekah Lodge and from the former she received a Corning Ware casserole presented by Mrs. T. Whent,, and from the latter a matching casserole, presented by Mrs. H. McCanna. On behalf of friends, Mrs. Mac adam presented a money corsage and cheque. In addition to the local friends attending were: Mesdames F.Ginn, J.Anderson, E.Linkewich and Mrs. Ford from Terrace Bay. Assisting the hostess were Mesdames G.Scott, M. Smilsky, G.Drake and R.Fournier. In addition to the formal presentations, Mrs. Hagen received many individual gifts. Mr. Hagen came to Schreiber sixteen years ago as operator for the Theatre and has, since it closed, been employed as an electrician. The Kinsmen are having a Calico Ball on May 8 in the high school . The High Schoo! players will present two plays on May 2 in the school . Mrs.J.Tronsen and Mrs.S.Webb of Ft .William spent the weekend with Mr.and Mrs.Lester McCuaig Miss Gertrude Cameron and D'Arcy Webb of Ft. William were with Mr.& Mrs.1.West for the weekend Gerry Wilson of Ft.William is in charge of the Men's Wear Dept.of Chapples Ltd. Mrs.Maria Doyle of Toronto and Mrs. Bill Small of Bolter, Ont.visited their mother Mrs.Sarah Potvin last week. Mrs.Gus Laurel who has been in St.Joseph's Hosp. in Pt. Arthur for three weeks returned home Tuesday. Flt .Lte.Lois Davis, RCAF, of St.Hubert, Que., has been visiting her sister Mrs.W.Lidkea and brothe Ken Davis and families, going on to Ft.William to Mrs.D.Nesbitt and Miss Lorraine Nesbitt brought Mrs.Walter Ilijow home from McKellar Hospital on Leanne een UE E EERE EERR SERRE The Catholic Women1s League will hold a social evening on May Ist in the Guild Hall.
