NEW OFFICERS INSTALLED AT C.W.L.MEETING Mrs .Bill Cocks presided for the regular meeting of the Catholic Women's League on April 12 with Father J.M.Cano giving the opening prayer--forty members present. Father Cano read rules and regulations governing the Association's activities--the nomination and electing of officers and their duties. He also spoke of the Youth Rally of the parish for Brownies, Girl Guides, Catholic Youth Organization, Girls' Club, Army Cadets and Squires, who will attend the 11 a.m.Mass in a body and urged mothers to make sure their children were present. The C.W.L. will attend the eight O'clock Mass on April 26th in a body. Mrs .R.T «Campbell, education convenor, said the Scarboro Foreign Mission wrote thanking her for the bundle of used postage stamps, asking also for dis- carded costume jewelry. Mrs.H.Shack, leader of the Catholic Girls' Club said the May crowning of the Virgin Mary is planned for the 13th--closing day of the C.W.L.convention being held here. The ceremony will take place at 4.30. She also presen- ted $50 from the club to the Parish Fund. Mrs. Bill Stefurak, Brownie Leader, stated a mothe and daughter banquet has been arranged for April 23 at 5.30 in the Anglican Church basement, which she hoped all mothers would attend. The Brownies saw a film on Conservation shown by Alf Bull and the second pack had distributed Easter baskets. Mrs. Bill Mullins, radio and T.V., reported secur- ing ratings for films and giving them to the school staff. Members were asked to give their names as soon as possible to the committee in charge of the convention meals in order that catering may be plan- ned well ahead of the event. Mrs.M.McGrath read an excerpt from the League magazine on the meaning and purpose of wearing a C.W.L.membership pin. A bingo was planned for this month with Mrs. Pearson to announce the date. Prescott, second vice president = Mrs. J.M.McGrath, third vice-president - Mrs.O.B.Fasan, recording secre= tary - Mrs.J.E.Stokes, corresponding secretary and Mrs.A.O'Keefe, treasurer. The officers were installed by Father Cano. Mrs. Cocks thanked her officers and the members for their co-operation and support during her term as president with particular appreciation to Father Cano for his guidance. Lunch was served by Mrs. Stokes committee. COUNCIL QUOTES The Reeve and full council attended the April mun- icipal meeting held in the town hall at 1.30 p.m. OtherSattending included grades 6-7-8 of Holy Angels Separate school accompanied by Rev .Sister Frances Joseph and Mr.Raymond Guillet, their teachers; Mrs.Charles Pearson and R.B.Spadoni. Reeve __ Harness welcomed the guests, in particular the school children, saying it was the first time, to his knowledge such a procedure had taken place. It was decided to advertise for an assessor and to authorize Clerk R.C.Skinner to secure extra office help as he required it. There was dissension among the members over this decision, councillors McGrath and Guina feeling that a full-time, experienced assistant should be found at once for Mr.Skinner, while Mrs. McCuaig and Mr.Jolicoeur felt that, in view of the clerk's salary and the approved book- keeping system he is required to use, a replacement would not be difficult to find. The police by-lay was given three reedings. A letter from Rebekah Lodge complained about the in- crease in rental for the Lodge room and the condition of the hall. After investigation following letter from Ft.William Health Unit, council accepted the welfare cost of Peter Polinuk. Notices were received of a N'western Ontario } Water Works conference on April 17 in Fort Williams of the Thunder Bay District Municipal League's 47th annual convention on April 28-29-30 in Fort William; from A.R.Morpurgo of a district planning workshop being held on May Ist and 2nd; from the Liquor Con= trol Board of Ontario that no decision h ad yet been made regarding an outlet in Schreiber. The matter of the Glad Bros.Motel legal property problem was sent to the town solicitor for action. The town is awaiting word from the Pt.Arthur and district Health Unit regarding their application for membership. In regard to Joseph Speziale's application water installation for motel, Mr.McGrath said this had been arranged. Waiter bills of $79.04 and general accounts total- | ling $2,226.14 were passed for payment. The clerk stated he had sent six tender forms to various firms and the rate of 10 cents a ton had b een set for use of the town scales. Six chairs were ordered for council chamber, as selected by P,J.Guina and Mrs.McCuaig. The others of the council demurred at the cost byt Mr.Guina and Mrs.McCuaig felt that in buying good quality furnishings money was saved in the long run. How- ever, if was decided to leave the purchase of a board= room table for later. Mr.McGrath pressed for authority to replace certain water mains but was asked to bring (Continued ..
