MARATHON DROPS SUPERIORS Marathon Mercuries, with only ten men in uniform, played inspired hockey in the first game of the North Shore Intermediate finals, dropping Terrace Bay Superiors on their home ice by a 5 = 3 score. Except for the closing minutes, when Superiors tried despar- ately to tie the score, Marathon was in complete charge of the game. Their close checking broke up the potent Supe attack and they took full advan- tage of the breaks that came their way. Maurice Osmar, Pytyck and Whalen scored for the Supes. Nutbrown with 2, Hunt, Russell and Lanteigne, scored for Marathon . Next game of the series will be played here on Thursday night at 8 p.m. ARENA SCHEDULE CHANGES With Minor Hockey playoffs, Intermediate play- offs; Figure Skating Carnival, etc., it sometimes becomes necessary at this time of year to make last minute changes in the Arena schedule. These are made only in emergencies and are publicized as far in advance as possible. Schedules are posted at the Arena and on the bul- letin boards at the Recreation Centre and schools. Check these to be sure of coming events. BADMINTON TOURNAMENT SUNDAY The Terrace Bay Badminton Club plays host to a North Shore social tournament this Sunday at the High School. Players from Marathon, Schreiber, Nipigon and Red Rock will be here for "fun" games during the afternoon. Local players are reminded to be out. Rememb er ... regular badminton sessions are every Monday from 8 to 10.30 and every Wednesday from 8.30 to 10.30. MIDGETS WIN NORTHSHORE CHAMPIONSHIP Last Saturday the Terrace Bay Midgets won the Northshore Championship by defeating Manitouwadge| 10 - 2 at the local Arena. Schreib er Midgets defaulted to Manitouwadge in the first game. The second game saw Terrace Bay defeat Nipigon 9 - 2. Manitouwadge then met Marathon in the third game and defeated them 3-2. Terrace Bay and Manitouwadge met in the final game} with Terrace Bay coming out on top. Terrace Bay Midgets will now meet Geraldton, with the winners of this series (continued page 7) COUNCIL QUOTES Reeve Heenan presided at the Council meeting on Tuesday evening. Present were Councillors Eraser, Thompson, Brown, Cavanaugh and Secretary-Treas- urer Strutt and Clerk Hanley. Minutes of the last meeting were adopted as pre- sented. Correspondence included requests from the Catholic Women's League and the Guide-Brownie Association for a Tag Day and Cookie Day respec- tively. Permission was granted to both organiza- tions. Advertising solicitations from the Figure Skating Club and the highschool year book commit- tee were approved. Permission was also given to the high school students who plan on making a trip to Ottawa next Fall to purchase a gift, not exceed- ing $15, to be presented to Mayor Charlotte Whitton from Terrace Bay. Membership in the Thunder Bay Municipal League was tabled for further consider- ation. A motion was passed to cover wage adjustments for township employees. The appointment of J. Wellings as Building Inspector at $15 per month, starting February Ist, was approved. The resignation of Murdo Campbell from the Rec- reation Committee was accepted and Council dis- cussed the method of choosing appointees. It was agreed to ask for volunteers who are willing to serve on the Recreation Committee. The Medical Officer of Health, Dr. D.J.M. McCausland, presented his annual report for the year 1963. His remarks indicated that residents had enjoyed good health. School children had been examined and immunization shots given. Pub- lic eating establishments and rest room facilities were periodically checked, also the town water supply. Of the 110 births in the hospital last year, 49 were to Terrace Bay residents. When questioned Dr .McCausland voiced approval of the audiometer purchased and of water fluoridizing. Councillor Cavanaugh broached the subject of Centennial projects, and suggested a committee be formed. The public are reminded that capital ex- penditure on projects should be governed by the per capita government grant and municipal spending (approximately $6,000). Councillor Brown discussed the call for curbing and paving tenders,published in the Lakehead. The revised Police Budget of $14,200 was discussed and the Library Budget approved. The line into the West sewage tank installed last year is frozen and will be checked during the summer. Councillor Thompson, on questioning the condition of the walk across the recreation centre grounds towards the hotel, was told that this is not under Council's jurisdiction.
