WANTED - IDEAS FOR CANADA'S CENTENNIAL The Council will welcome suggestions for approp- riate ways in which Schreiber could mark Canada's Centennial. There are grants available, under cer- tain conditions, to assist in acceptable projects for this purpose, but application must be made for these before August Ist, 1964. Therefore, a decision must shortly be made and all ideas will be given consider- ation if presented either to Clerk R C. Skinner or Mrs. Inez McCuaig. It is particularly hoped that the various groups of young people's associations will give some thought to this important matter and forward their ideas. RENTAL RATES FOR SCHOOL AUDITORIUM SET The High School Board held a special meeting to set rates for rental of the School Auditorium with local fees applicable to both Schreiber and Terrace Bay . For sports and athletic events where no charge is levied and no spectators allowed - $10.00 for three hours from 7.00 P.M. to 10.00 P.M. - where admission is charged and spectators allowed - $20.00 for three hours, 7.00 to 10.00 P.M. Dance - $50.00 for cabaret style and $25.00 for ordinary to 2.00 A.M. Educational, cultural events - organizations NOT charging admissions FREE. Organizations charging admissions - $15.00 Theatrical productions - $35.00 for evening, including matinee and one evening for rehearsal . Political evening - $15.00. Organizations requiring use of chairs must make their own arrangements with the caretaker . Applications for rental of Auditorium must be made in writing to Secretary W. S. Harris one week in advance and out-of-town organizations must contact the School Board. O.B. FASAN ADDRESSES P.T.A. The Separate School P.T.A. held its regular meeting on January 23rd with R. C. Campbell presiding. Mrs. W. Zaporzan reported membership is now 166. The attendance prize was won by Sister St. Edwina's room. Sister Frances Joseph spoke briefly asking the parents to co-operate with the teachers in seeing that students were properly pre- pared for the Easter examinations. Supervised home- work is of great assistance in this instance. Mr. Campbell introduced O. B. Fasan, principal Continued Je ee Schrether 's Grand Old Man Eddie Lawson, taken in his 82nd year, hard at work for the town obviously paying no attention to a Stop sign -Photo |.McCuaig "EDDIE" LAWSON RETIRES Surrounded by his family "Eddie" Lawson marked his 86th birthday and finally (they hope) admitted he has retired. Eddie was born in Fort Osnaburg on Lake St. Joseph and, with another teenage lad, paddled to White River seeking employment. After some years there Eddie came to Schreiber retiring in 1943 as section foreman. However, idleness proved a burden and energetic Eddie secured work as extra . man with the town utility squad and, at 80, was still one of its most active men. Twice since then Eddie has "retired" but accepted part-time employ- ment. During his years in Schreiber, Eddie has never missed morning service in St. John's Anglican Church except when on duty. Attending his party from out of town were Wilma (Mrs. R.S. Hutchison) of Ft. William who brought the birthday cake and Edith (Mrs. Alex O'Grodnik) of Terrace Bay with her husband. Mrs. Alice Potvin, daughter, and Mrs. R. Nesbitt, wife of a grandson, assisted Mrs. Lawson in serving the family dinner. PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST ON JANUARY 31st All residents of Terrace Bay and Schreiber are urged to attend the sixth annual NORTH SHORE PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST which will take place FRIDAY, JANUARY 3ist, 1964, at 8.00 P.M. in the SCHREIBER HIGH SCHOOL. Students from Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Nipigon=Red Rock will participate. This annual contest is sponsored by the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, ST. EDWARD'S COUNCIL NO. 3554.
