Harris-President of the ELECTRICAL WORKERS UNION 1861 A LABOUR DAY SAFETY MESSAGE FROM THE MILL UNIONS Another Labour Day observance is just ahead. Again we celebrate the outstanding achievements of all working men and women who are helping to make Canada a great industrial nation. As Labour Day approaches, it is fitting that the Unions should comment on the outstanding safety record now being achieved here at the Terrace Bay mill. Cooperation of each Union member has made possible the build up of consecutive safe days which we have achieved. We should be mindful of the simple fact that we all benefit when our safety record is good. Certainly it is the worker who really loses when there is a disabling injury. So,we should continually exert maximum effort to prevent accidents. Traditionally, the trade union movement has always been vitally concerned with the best interests of its members. So, vital union interest with on-the-job safety should have never been a surprise to anyone, But now a worker is two to three times as safe at work as he is off-the-job, even at home. So,union interest in off-the-job safety is increasing. We must all learn to apply, off-the-job, the same safety principles we use while we earn our daily bread. A disabling injury off-the-job is no less painful than one which occurs at work, A family deprived of its breadwinner by a highway fatality is just as heart- broken as would be the same family involved in an industrial fatality. Qut best interests must be safeguarded by preventing accidents wherever they are liable to occur. This we should strive to do not just on Labour Day or when we are establishing new safety records, but every day. Sane to Labor 'Dray EVERYTHING IN OUR DAY-BY-DAY WORLD, THE COMFORT-FILLED HOMES WE LIVE IN, THE DYNAMIC CARS WE DRIVE, THE DIVERSIFIED TOOLS WE EMPLOY, THE FORWARD LOOKING MISSILES OF OUR DEFENCE, THE MARVELLOUS, MODERN PRODUCTS WHICH COME FROM OUR FORESTS, PULP MILLS AND CONVERTING PLANTS - ALL ARE END PRODUCTS CREATED BY OUR WORKING MEN AND WOMEN. THEY ARE VITAL FORCES IN OUR WAY OF LIFE. TO AJ. OF LABOR .... BACKBONE OF OUR NATION'S PROSPERITY .... WE GIVE OUR MOST SINCERE SALUTE AND THANKS 3
