The program opened with the school choir singing and the Salutatory was given by Elizabeth McGuire. Mr. Colborne spoke on "The Hidden Purpose of Education", saying in part, that equal opportunity in education is the gift of democracy Primarily, education is concerned with certain basic skills - reading, writing which give the ability to communi- cate, calculation, an obvious requirement, and a sense of sociability. This last shows and teaches the child in first school years how to work, to share and to plan together. Geography, science and study of world events each day, provide the child with a background against which learning can be utilized. But, continued Mr. Colborne, these basic neces- sities of learning are not enough to create a happy human being, Wtich is the ultimate purpose of all education. Happiness, however, is a term so widely misunderstood that much sadness and confusion re- sult. The child must learn that work, not money, is the only means of attaining the qualities which ul- timately produce the truly happy adult possessing the qualities of faith, integrity, love for others, spiritual faith, interest in books and the desire to learn. The pleasures bought with money can only bring disillusion, discontent and, often, despair. P.T.A. President R.T.
