wv Vol.5, Ho.49 ye * MILL OPERATIONS AT TERRACE BAY Good Communications has always been high on the list of principtes of Good Management with Kimberly-Clark, With this in mind, I would like to place the following information regarding our opera- tions before all residents of the Terrace Bay area, Over the past year, the market for High Quality Bleached Sulphate Pulp such as we pro- duce here has changed to this extent: 1, The selling price of our products has de- creased $15.00 per ton, or 10%, This has been only partly offset by a more favourable ex- change rate on the Canadian dollar and we have no assurance that the exchange advantage will remain with us, 2. This drop in price has been mainly brought about by many new pulp mills coming into pro- duction - most of which have been in the South and West where pulp is now made from slabwood chips, a by-product of the lumber industry, thus' materially reducing their wood costs, Also, the competition in finished cellulose products has become much keener due to in- creased capacity relative to demand, 3, The price of magazine paper made from our pulp has decreased and this exerts further pressure on pulp prices, 4, As our product is a high cost fibre, its use must be limited to the amount necessary to supply the "strength" requirements for papers that are continually being produced at higher speeds and lighter weights, Internationally and domestically, the pulp picture is not expected to clear for' some time and cannot be viewed with enthusiasm, to say the least, Although it should not be cause for alarm, it should be cause for concern, One thing sure, economies will be the order of the day, In instituting such economies , local management will continue to strive to do the best thing for the greatest number. of people, Your cooperation, I am 'sure, 'cari be counted upon, With our fine Mill and Town ind with the excellent record: we have in the field of em- ployee relations, we are confident that with some belt erenee we will weather. the squall, J.A.
