gr = ence ees Vol.5, No. 34 Servi the District VSI in_ which we live August 23, 1962 SWIMMING POOL WARNING With construction on the swimming pool nearly completed, it is now necessary to take precautions for the safety and protection of both the children and of the pool itself, At the present time, there is water in the pool for test purposes, There is also a great deal of pool equipment still uncovered, For this reason, we ask the co-operation of parents and children alike, to be sure that this e- quipment is not touched and that safety pre- cautions be taken in the pool area. Until such time as a permanent deck and fence are erected, we must be particularly careful that no accidents occur, and we hope the parents impress this fact upon their children, At present, plans call for the opening of the pool in early September, Keep posted on the NEWS for further developments, SUMMER AWARDS NIGHT AND PLAYGROUND DISPLAY The annual Summer Awards Night and Play- ground Display will be held on Thursday, August 30th, this year, Once again, all a- wards for summer activities - including base- ball, swimming, playground activities, and other sunmer awards - will be presented during this evening. In addition, a display of arts and crafts made at Playground during the sum- mer will be on view, and a programme of en- tertainment will be provided by the Play- ground children, This is a big night for the kids, and we - urge all parents to take part in the evening, to show their interest in the children's pro- gramme, Set that night, Thursday, August 30th, aside on your date calendar, ee meson FOREST PROTECTION (Dept.of Lands & Forests) Geraldton - Forest fire fighters in the form of rain drops have been falling throughout the district at periodic intervals for the past month, This has kapt the fire hazard to normal and reduced the fires. by close to 50% of normal, So far, during this 1962 fire season, only 29 fires have occurred in the district. Lightning, which usually causes 60% of the fires', has been responsible for only seven fires to date, District Fires as of August 15th, 1962. CAUSE - Campers - 11 fires - Lightning - 7 fires - Railways - 4 fires - Miscellaneous - 4 fires - Land Clearing - 2 fires and Log- ging Operations - 1 fire, It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires great strength to decide on what to do, ae ow - Elbert Hubbard, KIWANIS DONATE $1000 TO SWIMMING POOL The President of the Terrace Bay Kiwanis Club, Monty Paget, announced that $1000.00 'will be donated for the erection of a fence around the new swimming pool, The people of Terrace Bay are thanked for their support of Kiwanis Fund Raising activities which have made this donation possible. In order to make this sizeable donation, the Kiwanis Club decided to do away with thellal- -leweten Party this year, except for some assistance to the Teen Age Dance, The most recent large community donation was the installation of television outlets in the Hospital which have provided a means for patients to be entertained while confined there, The next Fund Raising Activity will be the sale of Kiwanis Apples next month, mee ee ree SCHREIBER COUNCIL MEETS Reeve W.E, D*Arcy, councillors J,P, Guina, F.V. Harness and I,M. McCuaig attended the ' August meeting of the municipal council-~- councillor McGrath on vacation, Mr, Guina was delegated to pursue the matter of the exchange of land for garage with the Glad Bros, In connection with altering present traffic signs, it was deemed advisable to have the agent come to Schreiber and discuss the mat- ter, Bids for the old ambulance were filed for further consideration, Insurance for the old ambulance was transferred to the new one and increased protection agreed upon, The gravel filtering wall at the new nui- sance grounds will be completed as soon as a stretch of dry weather permits, A building permit for Costs*s new shopping centre was granted, under council's prero- gative, subject to transfer of land from one parcel to another, and with agreement that the old building on one lot be demolished within specified tine, A protest on blocking of lane by debris will be attended to immediately, A lane used for dumping purposes will also be cleared a once by guilty party, Edward Borutski was appointed inspector, under the act, to provide for safety of work- men during construction, alteration, repair or demolition of buildings, Schreiber Hotel's application to have parking meter removed was filed, Mrs, A.W.
