Vol.5, No.3 Serving the istrict in which we live Ure 'January 18, 1962 NEW WOOD STORAGE SYSTEM PLANNED FOR TERRACE BAY MILL Exclusive to Terrace Bay News The Kimberly-Clark Pulp and Paper Company at Terrace Bay has announced plans for a major change in wood storage facilities, Since start-up in 1948, four-foot wood has been stored in Wood Yard piles for use during winter months. Plans now call for outside storage of chips rather than logs, The system has been proven elsewhere but it will be the first such installation in this part of Canada. Prime reason for the change is the sub- stantial saving that will be achieved. -- Under the new system, winter woodhandling operations will require far less manpower and mechanical equipment,. Estimated savings in labour, equipment, and maintenance costs are expected to be substantial. The entire move is. planned to insure continuing full-time. employment for the great majority of: the Company's employees at Terrace Bay, » Switchover to the new system is scheduled for the fall of 1963, It is expected to be in t Su. operation sometime in, 1964, TERRACE BAY COUNCIL INAUGURAL MEETING Sworn into office Wednesday by Clerk W.F, Strutt, Reeve J.P.Heenan welcomed, on behalf of himself and Councillor D. Evans-= Smith, newcomers to Council, A, Fraser, A. Valiquette and J, Wellings, before proceeding to the business at hand, Spectators at the inaugural meeting. - included Assistant Clerk W. Hanley, Acting Fire Chief R. Hofland and Chief Constable H. Billings, Minutes of two December meetings were read and adopted. Correspondence included advice from the solicitor regarding 'purchase of land for the Industrial Area. Mrs. F. Gaulin offered paintings for the opening of the new Utilities Building and requested consideration if murals are painted, N.T.Commisso asked permission to operate a Body Repair and Paint Shop in 'the Indust~ rial Area and after an explanation of his plans by Councillor Wellings, Council referred Mr, Commisso to the Company who are present owners of the property. Reeve Heenan enlightened new Councillors on the purpose of the Industrial Area. A detailed Police report from Chief Billings showed a decrease in activities during the month of December, Three adults and a juvenile who had broken into Island View Service had been apprehended at | Peterborough, . Magistrate's Court, held h i ; ence Sur Tne Pat Uae dppetteds tour SCHREIBER COUNCIL BACKS HIGH SCHOOL BOARD The "High School Board met with Town Council on January 8th in a special meeting concerned with the building of a new High School in Schreiber, Present were Reeve W.E.D'Arcy, Councillors J,P,Guina, F.W.Harness, and Mrs. Inez McCuaig, also'School Board members Vice Chairman L.ReMcCuaig, with Harold McParland, M.J,McGrath and Cyril Sparkes. Chairman Alex Gordon and Councillor J.M. McGrath were unable to attend. Mr, McCuaig gave a full report.on the meeting in Toronto in December when he and Mr, Gordon had met with the Department of Education and representatives from Terrace Baye The Board, it was stated, could not, in the best. interests of Schreiber, accept the last proposal made by Terrace Bay to establish a District or Joint High School and the Council unanimously backed their decision, assuring them of their whole- hearted support of the momentous decision. SCHREIBER COUNCIL INAUGURAL MEETING The inaugural meeting of Council was held Jan. 8, at:7 P.M, with Reeve D'Arcy, Council- lors J,P.Guina, F.W.Harness, Inez McCuaig and clerk R.C,Skinner present. Councillor J.M.McGrath was absent dur to illness. No citizens were present. After the oath of office was taken the Reeve welconied Mrs. McCuaig back, and also stated he was pleased to see Councillor McGrath re-elected,*he being both an able worker and one who co-operated with others on council, Mr, D'Arcy said the mill rate must be kept in the foreground when the budget for the year is set up and listed various payments to be made during the year, Councillors spoke briefly and, with the reeve, paid tribute to efficiency and' co- operation of clerk Skinner who thanked the members, promising to assist in every way during the coming year, Reeve D'Arcy stated he had been informed by solicitor H, Blanchard that legal tangles surrounding the closing of roads and lanes, and the exchange of property between Alex McKay and the town, had been unsnarled and the town could expect word of this soon. Two hundred dollars was set as the price for that portion of Quebec St. between the Canadian Legion and the High School. Members discussed decisions made at the court of revision, Appointments made were: R.C,Skinner - Clerk-Treas., tax collector and assessment commissioner; Thos, Aw Whitton = utility man; Arnold Burns - Town Hall caretaker; F.H,Black & Co. auditors; H.Blanchard, Q.C. - town solicitor; J.M.Cornell, M.D. - Medical Officer of Health (Continued on n_Fage 11)
