Circulation Terrace Bay PRESENTATIONS MADE AT COUNCIL MEETING tinct ie Ce the regular meeting of Council Y sednesday afternoon in the Municipal Office, the R i a8. . 9 'ne Reeve, Councillors and guests witnessed the presentation of several awards earned during the past Season, Councillor Des Evans-Smith had the pleas-- ure of presenting the new Town Crests to Mrs.Peggy Wellings for each member of her Curling Rink as a memento of the special recognition they had brought to the Town of Terrace Bay, Mrs, Wellings thanked Coun- cil for the honor, feeling it should inspire them on to bigger and better things, Representing the Fire Marshal*s Office Mr.Lorne Cottenden made the 1960 Fire i Presentation Week Award to the Reeve, Mr, John Ferrier, Mr,Cottenden explained this was a national movement throughout the United States and Canada--238 competing in the United States and 538 competing in Canada last year, The Award to Terrace Bay had been Honourable Mention and, in Class "F" the town had taken a first for Ontario, Mr. Cottenden paid public tribute to Mr.George Maitland who had done such an excellent job. Thanking Mr.Cottenden, Reeve Ferrier turned the Award over to Mr, Joe Heenan who, as Chairman of the Fire Commit- tee, presented it to Mr. George Maitland, Fire Chief, Councillor Heenan felt little of the credit could go to anyone but Mr.Maitland as he alone had supplied the ideas and most of the legwork, Council's support being mainly moral, He too offered his congratu- lations as he made the award to Mr, Maitland, Thanking Mr,Heenan for Council's Support in the past, Mr,Maitland suggested they watch for something new this coming October during Fire Prevention Week, which he and Acting Chief Mr,Hofland were preparing, Continuing on with the business of Coun- cil, minutes of the last regular meeting were perused and accepted, together with a report from the Dog Catcher, Mr, Doug. Caldwell, Correspondence read by the Secretary, Mr. W.F,Strutt, included a request to Mr. J, D,Garland, District Engineer, requesting the 40 M.P.H. speed zone be extended to include the entrance to the Mill Road: a letter from the Hydro Commission outlining the retail Sales Tax: a letter received from the Dis- trict Engineer outlining the reasons for his decision against the proposed lagonee as: 1. Maintenance problems - 2, Danger of freezing and 2. Danger of short circuiting, Council had requested the Department of Lands and Forests to photograph from their helicopter when available over Terrace Bay, the Town proper, the proposed Trailer Park area and the Sewage Area, The Fire report for July was received from Acting Chief Hofland, covering the holiday reserve and stating that the bush fire hazard is now low to medium, Council authorized (Continued on Page 4) No.33. (EWS - August 17, 1961 COMET*S RALLY SPARKS PLAYOFFS The Terrace Bay Comets travelled to the Lakehead last Thursday night and handed the East Ends.a 6 - 4 defeat to enter the play- offs for the first time since they joined League, Park ibe Kolody pitched 8-hit ball to gain the victory for the Comets. MacKenzie pitched two and two-third innings, and was | relieved by Scavarelli. MacKenzie took the loss, ; Nipper Osmar and Kolody each had two hits, Sonny MacLeod had a triple, to lead the Comets at the plate, In the first play-off game, held Sunday at the Lakehead, the Comets outlasted the Fort William East Ends, defeating them 10 - 9, Incidentally, all play-off games will be played at the Lakehead. Rex "Red Fox't Taylor pitched eight and two-third innings then Kolody came in to relieve him.
