Paed., at a dinner given by the Thunder Bay Film Council in May in the Prince Arthur Hotel, Mr. Dalzell, who is Director of Education for Port Arthur Schools, chose as his topic "Education in an Expanding World". He took a hard appraising look at the problems facing educators and called for a rigorous re- shaping.of educational objectives and a raising of standards of achievement expected of today's pupils. "We need to get more achievement out of our pupils at every level and to direct their search for a richer and fuller appreciation of the good things of life. Nobody expects us to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear =- but we should expect to be able to raise a better sow's ear --.and-to make an artistic creation out ofa silk purse", said the speaker. "Educators are expected to teach many new topics, soa great deal that is outdated must now be pruned out of the curriculum, Since Sputnick, there has'been an increased emphasis on science, and that is good, but in the desire to acquire more 'know how! we must not lose sight of the 'know why!, It is important that we re-examine our moral and spiritual values and in erecting.a mountain of knowledge, we must make sure that we keep at the pinnacle a symbol which is in consonance with and control of the base", The speaker' was introduced by Miss Reita Rankin, Librarian of the Fort William Public Library, and he was thanked by Mrs. Astrid Mosbeck of Fort Frances. The delegates who represented film councils and committees in Fort Frances, Atikokan and Dryden as well.as the Thunder Bay Film Council and both Lakehead Public Libraries, discussed ways of expanding and improving the supply of educational films throughout Northwestern Ontario, At these meetings it was decided to conduct another film use workshop at the Quetice Con- ference and Training Centre - next fall, -Plans were laid to circulate.a "Film of the Month" throughout the area each month, Mr. H.E. Thomas of Com- munity Programmes Dranch 1 conducted a discussion session on improved- promotional practices by film councils, The delegates made their selection of the new films to be purchased by the Fed- eration for circulation next season, New officers elected were President - Mrs, Astrid Mosbeck, First Vice.Pres, - B,Stewart, 2nd Vice - Mrs. T,.
