BADMINTON NEWS We hear (from Marathon) that approximately fifteen members of the Marathon Badminton Club drove up here on Sunday, Feb.18th and enjoyed a very informal series of mixed games with the Terrace Bay Club. SKI CLUB NOTES |. With the advent of the recent long-awaited snowfalls the activities of the Ski Club have moved into high gear. Good use is being made of the wider main hill and the newly opened trail to the South; and the warming hut with its refreshment facilities has proven very popular on cold or stormy days. Bruce Rapke's first Ski Class was well attended. and will be a regular event on Saturdays from 10 A.M. until noon for the balance of the season, The Recreation Committee spon- sored Bruce at the Ski Instructor's School of the Lake Superior Ski Zone in December, end he is passing this training on to other nembers, Regarding Fees ~- At the last General Meeting the fees were set at $3.00 Junior, $5.00 A special executive neeting was held to discuss a fee reduction, | due to the' shortened season and it was decid= ed that this was not possible due to the .arge development programme scheduled for the coming summer, Only 22 members have paid to date but it is hoped that all skiers will con tribute their share soon to enable the com- pletion of this work, _ The major plan for this year is installat- ion of pulleys and a power unit for a rope tow, the rope to be financed next winter through fees and tow charges, In addition the main hill will be further widened and the } soil stabilized against erosion, and more trails will be opened, Cost of this work is estimated at $150.00 for the summer plus $200.00 next winter for the rope, ' Note to Parents - The hill will be patrolled on WEEKENDS ONLY by the Senior members, and _ _miss_a minute of it! Your Executive, FIGURE SKATING JUDGING CLASS TO BE HiLD A class in Figure Skating Judging will be started Friday, March 3 at 7 P.M. by Mrs. Betty Bouchard, Anyone interested in judging or in learning figure skating requirements is invited to attend in the small meeting room of the Recreation Centre, SUPERIORS TAK# FIRST PLAYOFF GAME . The Terrace Bay Band added to the tempo of competition with martial and popular tunes preceding and between periods of the first semi-playoff game of the N.S.H,L. between the Superiors and Nipigon Flyers, in which Sup- eriors outsmarted the Flyers 9-3, Superiors were the strongest team through- out the game but any complacency would be dangerous against Nipigon who have the never- say~die attitude and are dangerous to the last play. Close checking through the first period kept the score one all, Superiors forged ah- ead to a comfortable five to one margin at the close of the second, and were close pressed a the beginning of the third by a concentrated Nipigon goal drive, Flyers ran up two fast goals without a retaliation but in their hun- ger for more opened up opportunities for Sup- eriors to capitalize on breaks. Superiors maintained a five man attack which accounted for the defenseman Pollard and Pytyck being top scorers with two goals apiece, Best working lines for Sups fell to Calder, Stachiw and Polhill, Stachiw seoring one while Polhill and Calder were in on assi- sts, Whalen, Marv and Maurice Osmar and Adamo all figured in the Superior scoring, Nipigon had Ward, C, Manilla and Dahl as thei goal getters, The Defense remained strong and as in playoff hockey the checks were solid, but penalties held to minor infractions, The second game will be played at Terrace Bay Tuesday, Feb, 28th, PLAYER AWARDS Player of the Day Award winners at the Superior games on Feb, 21st and 26th were as follows: Feb. 21st - Rick Polhill, recipient of a $5.00 voucher from North Shore Bottling Works of Terrace Bay. Feb, 26th - Bill Pytyck, recipient of a $5.00 voucher from K, Weppler Insurance of Terrace Bay.
