His Department's plans for development of the extensive area now opened up were out- lined by the Minister at the 33rd annual meeting of the Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters, "For many years, people have dreamed of the day when they could drive along the east and north shore of Lake Superior on Highway : 17 from the Sault through country long accessible only by train and aircraft," Mr.Spooner remarked. "Now the gates are open for a flow of traffic through to the Lakehead and beyond..... Long before the recent highway opening ' ceremonies at Wawa, the Department of Lands and Forests had been busy planning to meet the needs of the general public hitherto unable to take advantage of the areas of Crown lands now opened up, especially in the White River area, We are trying to effect the most economi- cal form of overall administration along the section from the Sault.to the Lakehead by combining our chief ranger stations with _ provincial park entrance establishments, >, . thereby avoiding duplication of buildings and achieving operational economy, Establishment of commercial tourist sites _ along the highway is being done through _ co-operation with the Department of Highways ' in determining best locations with safe , entrances to the Highway for convenience, accident prevention and safe driving, Land for commercial establishments such as motels and restaurants along Highway 17 is being ; put up for tender and everything possible is being done to ensure successful operation of such services, We are planning location of appropriate ' and suitable public parks and campsites within easy-reach of motorists. "At Red Rock Lake will be the Lake Superior Provincial Park headquarters, combined with the chief ranger headquarters. The headquar- ters now at Sand Lake.,.will be moved here, with temporary buildings to be in operation by 1961. "Baldhead River is a potential site for an auto service centre and restaurant. There are other promising sites which must be de- cided upon with the idea of providing the best, most convenient and most strategically located services for the public travelling through this vast and beautiful region..... "The outlook is most attractive when you consider the kind of parks we are providing, for example at Pancake Bay and Agawa Bay, north of the Sault, along the sandy beaches of Lake Superior, These are equipped with facilities and services to make a visit to this wonderland forever memorable." | RED ROCK ROYALS TAKE LEAGUE LEAD Last Thursday night at the Terrace Bay Arena the Red Rock Royals defeated the Super- iors in a hard fought battle by an eight to four score, thereby taking possesion of top spot in the League. Marvin Osmar opened the scoring in the first period but Gordie Dunville and Noel Camire tallied to put Red Rock ahead and Superiors never closed the gap. The second period was all Red Rock!s as Neil Seagrice scored twice, Camire added his second and Wally Krawezult 'single bronght the Royalts score to six. In the third period Tookenay, Maurice Osmar and Whalen narrowed the gap to six to.four but].
