One hears "this is good fishing weather" so -- come rain or shine (and 01! Sol keeps a-trying) next Saturday and Sunday will see many anglers hie for their favorite spots and try for that lucky fish, The Kiwanis Club of Terrace Bay, sponsors of the Derby, invite all to attend the big Pre-Derby Dance this Friday night. MOBILE CHEST X-RAY UNIT HERE IN SEPTEMBER Terrace Bay residents will be given the opportunity of receiving free Chest X-Rays this September when a Mobile Unit will arrive here, In addition, school children, from kindergarden to age 14, will receive tuberc- ulin skin tests, This will only. be done with the consent of the parents. A sharp increase in the number of cases of Tuberculosis has been noted in some localities in the Thunder Bay District. For this reason and for personal peace of mind , everyone should take the opportunity being offered and make it a point to have a chest X-Ray when the Unit is here. The Kiwanis Club of Terrace Bay will be assisting in the survey here in order that complete coverage will be made in the Town, Future articles will be presented to fully acquaint the public with all aspects of chest x-ray and tuberculin skin tests. LOCAL RESIDENT CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY On July 27th, 1959, Mrs, Theresa Wharton celebrated her 90th birthday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Harris Haughn, 270 Kenogami Road. Born in West Berlin, Queens County, Nova Scotia, Mrs, Wharton came to Terrace Bay in 1951 where she has resided since, Mrs. Wharton's main interest in life has been her home and family and she is highly skilled at all the home making crafts; skills which she took pains to impart to her daughters and granddaughters, Her quilting and knitted articles have been masterpieces - a pastime which she finds increasingly difficult as her eyesight isn't quite what it once was, _ although she enjoys excellent health and has a remarkably keen memory, Many friends from Terrace Ray and Schreiber visited Mrs, Wharton on the big day and she was the recipient of many cards, flowers and gifts which included two beaut- ifully decorated cakes -- one presented by Mrs, J, Corbett of Schreiber and one made by Mrs, Haughn and decorated by a granddaughter, Mrs, E, E, West. Six children were born to Mrs. Wharton, three of whom still survive. She has fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great- grandchildren, AWARDS NIGHT AND PLAYGROUND DISPLAY All those who earned awards through Physical Fitness Tests, Swimming Tests, Minor Baseball and Track and Field Day will be honoured at a Variety Night programme in the High School Auditorium on August 21st. In addition, all arts and crafts made at Playground during the summer will be dis- played, and skits and stunts will be provid- ed by the Playground children, This is an important night in the lives of the youngsters, so let!s have all the parents out, SWIM MEET SATURDAY, AUGUST 22nd. The Terrace Bay Swim Team will compete with swimmers from Red Rock, Marathon and other centres, in a variety of swimming races| 5 on the afternoon of August 22nd, Crests will be awarded to lst, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each event, TOO MANY CARIBOU ON SLATE ISLAND??? A caribou census on the Slate Islands in Lake Superior revealed an estimated 40 animals, a density of about three caribou per square mile, "Studies indicate that the islands are overpopulated with this animal," - Ontario Lands and Forests Department officers say, "and an attempt has been made to trans- port some elsewhere. One calf has been sent to a game farm in Alberta for study by scientists," SQUARE AND FOLK DANCE WORKSHOP TO BE HELD A Square and Folk Dance Workshop for "callers" and club executive members will be held on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, September llth, 12th and 13th, 1959, at the Quetico Conference and Training Centre, Kawene, Ontario. The Workshop is being sponsored by the Lakehead and District Square and Folk Dance Association in cooperation with the Commun- ity Programmes Branch of the Ontario Depart- ment of Education, ; The Workshop is planned to provide an opportunity for callers and executive members of clubs to "live-in" for a weekend of top- notch instruction and discussion under ex- cellent learning conditions, (Cont'd on Page 3)
