"TERRACE Bay | Circulation Terrace Bay & Schreiber PROFICIENCY AWARDS PRESENTED IN TWO SCHOOLS On Tuesday, June 23rd, pupils of the Terr- ace Bay Public School assembled for 'presenta- tion of the Grade Eight Proficiency Award, Introduced by the Principal, Mr. W. Cole- borne, Dr, Arthur Lavender spoke briefly to the children, Mr, D.A.Locking, Terrace Bay's High School Principal and also the Kiwanis Chairman of Award Committee, introduced the Kiwanis President, Mr. Nerman Coan, who made the presentation of the Kiwanis Proficiency Award. Mr,Coan, after explaining the method of choosing the Award Winner, announced it would be presented this year to Miss Maureen Hall. Maureen had to have a 75% or better average in her subjects as well as receive the majority of votes cast by her teacher and fellow students. She received the pla que which, with her name and year inscribed upon it, will remain in the school halis, and a medal for herself, Mrs. F.O, Soughton then came forward to present Maureen with a beauti- ful wristwatch, the Soughton Proficiency Award, with her hearty congratulations. The children were dismissed following the singing of 'God Save the Queen, ST.MARTIN!S GRADUATION EXERCISES Graduation exercises for St.Martin's Sep- arate School was held Thursday afternoon, June 25th in the High School Auditorium, Mr. Ray Kenney, Principal, welcomed the parents and friends who were present and acknowledged the co-operation given to him by his staff, He also thanked the C.W.L. for sponsoring their Field Day and their special guests, Mrs. R.J,Todd, Mrs, F,.0,Soughton, Very Rev.Dean E,A,Gallagher and Dr, J. Whiteside, for being present on this occasion, The students who were declared Gade Cham- pions of the St.Martin's Field Day came for- ward to receive their awards from Mr.Kenney, They were: Grade VIII Fred Anderson, Grade VII Velma LeBlanc, Grade VI David Falzetta, Grade V Marie Sadowick, Grade IV Brian Pineault, Grade III Connie Fawcett, Grade II Cathy Pin- eault, Grade I Linda Helmink, Kindergarten Gordon MacMillan and Don Campbell. Following this a pleasing little program was enjoyed with each room or grade taking part. On the fading notes of the last song Mr.Kenney presented Very Rev.Dean E.A,Galla- gher P.P, who awarded the Graduation Certifi- cates to the following: Michael MacDonald, John MacDonald, Henry Stuart, Annette Comeau, Elaine Long, Kit Knauff, Jane Heenan and Rose- mary Long, Dr, J.Whiteside, on behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Terrace presented .tha Kiwanis General Proficiency Award for 1959 to Jane Heenan, He congratulated Jane and explained the qual- ities necessary to be chosen for this award, With an average of 75% or better scholasti- cally, the qualifying students were then voted upon by their teachers and their classmates, Jane received a medal for herself and a pla' que to hang in the school with her name and year engraved upon it. REEVES INVITED TO MEET QUEEN INAUGURAJ, MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL ON FRIDAY JEWS July 2nd, 1959 Mrs. F,0,Soughton with her sincere congratula-~ tions. The C.W.L, President, Mrs.J.Todd, made the League's annual presentation of their Deportment Award to Miss Annette Comeau. -- Here again a plaque: will be inscribed with Annette's name to hang in the school and she also received a suitably inscribed medal. President Harold Ermel was assisted in the procedure by Past President Jack Ridsdale. Officers installed for the 1959-60 season were as follows:- Past President, H. FORESTRY ASSOCIATION PROGRAM IN LOCAL SCHOOLS ° The Ontario Forestry Association on its annual fire prevention tour visited grades seven and eight of the Terrace Bay Public 'TED PRESIDENT OF LIONS CLUB : and St.Martin's Separate Schools on Wednesday, June 23rd, Malcomson on fire prevention and the necess- ary cautions to be taken in our forests. Following this two movie films were shown. The first film, titled "Ti-Jean Goes Lumber- ing" is a story based on a French folk-tale, depicting the superhuman powers of a small boy who becomes a lumberjack, The second film, "In Partnership with Na- ture" illustrates many points on conservation and the concept of sustained yield in our forests today. The program ended with an open discussion period to answer any questions pertaining to the second film, Invitations have apparently been sent to the elected representatives of the people in the entire area giving them an opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth, Reeve J.A.Ferrier and Mrs.Ferrier have been invited to Port Arthur Civic Auditorium on July 9th to be presented to Her Majesty on behalf of the citizens of Terrace Bay, Reeve and Mrs. W. Darcy of Schreiber have also received an invitation but, owing to illness in the family, regretfully declined the honour, The first meeting of the newly-elected Reeve and Council will be held Friday, July 3rd. Council regretfully point out that accommodation in the Municipal Office is- extremely- limited.
