Vol. 25 No. § PET POISONING EPIDEMIC HITS SCHREIBER | | ' ! »AY NEws. February 5, 1959 The sorrowful episode in the Story of Jake and the Kid has its counterpart in Schreiber during the past ten days when the pets of some twenty-odd families have died. The dogs, ' the indignant public are convinced, died from strychnine poison. One pet, sent to a well- known veterinarian was, in his opinion, the victim of such a cruel act. They are, for the most part, older and smaller dogs, which seldom stray from their own premises, but within a brief ten minutes from the time some have left the door they have returned to die in such a short time that nothing can be done for them. This points to the fact that the vicious killer knows exactly the correct amount to administer, or the painful death would be a lingering one. Adults are deeply concerned for fear the deadly drug might be picked up in some manner by small children for it still has not been established in what manner it is being dis- tributed. The M,O.H, and the Police at first consid- ered it more probable that an epidemic of some | sort had struck the town, but this was dis- qualified, it would seem, in the case of the valuable dog kept in wired grounds at the Lake | which suffered the same fate as dogs running about. The Police are doing all within their power to investigate and, if a poisoner is at large, apprehend him, but it will require the aid of the public who can search their grounds and keep a sharp watch for suspicious actions.
