The purpose of this programme is to bring about desirable changes in the "pehind-the-wheel" behaviour of drivers, sai} Dr. Dymond, This will be accomplished by an announced point schedule which will provide' for warning letters and personal interviews at certain levels so that driv- . ers will be fully informed of their record and that action may be taken to improve their driving habits. "This programme will be widely pub- licized through advertisements, releases, statements and printed material," assured the Transport Minister, "Research has shown that persons who build up a record of numerous convictions are much more accident prone, The point system is there- fore an integral part of a complete. high- way safety programme, It is of interest i to note that point systems are in operation jin over twenty jurisdictions in North America and these have proven themselves a major factor in reducing the accident - rate significantly," "A responsible driver has nothing to fear under the point system," continued Dr. Dymond, "It would be necessary, for example, to'have six convictions carrying a two point total in a two yéar period to come urder the mandatory suspension of three months, The points have been care- . fully determined after a study of the' Onta-io situation and an appraisal of the research study just completed by Dr.B.J,.
