Borcher (color) 2-D February 20th - February 21st INDIAN FIGHTER Starring Kirk Douglas E, Martinelli (color) Cinemascope 0-0-0 KIWANIS CLUB NEWS On Tuesday night, February 12th Mr, and Mrs, Garnet Valiquette, the parents of the first baby born in 1957 to Terrace Bay residents were guests of the Kiwanis Club and were presented with a cheque by the Club, Previously the gifts for the new baby as donated by the various merchants were delivered to the home of Mr, and Mrs. Valiquette. Mrs. Valiquette very approp- riately thanked all the merchants who had been so generous with the lovely gifts, ft a recent Director's meeting of the Club a One Hundred Dollar donation to the Home and School Association was approved, This donation was made toward the cost of an eye-testing machine for use in the schools which the Association have been using on a very satisfactory trial basis. Mazza _ G, Reginald "Red" Horner, Defence- man of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1923.- 29 to 1940-41 seasons, and Captain for the last two seasons of his hockey career with the National Hockey League was a welcomed, distinguished hockey "great" at the Arena here last Thursday, As far as is know, "Red" is the only former all-time great from outside the Branch to appear in any locale to talk to its youngsters under the jurisdiction of the Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Association. Terrace Bay's honour of having had "Red" Horner was made possible through the office of Jack M, Thomas, Manager of the Superiors. Prior to the Mercuries-Superiors game "Red" delivered remarks of inspiration and encouragement to the Bantam players. "Red" stated that the youngsters and the Community as a whole were very fortunate to have a modern Recreation Centre with all the facilities made available wder one roof, Directing his remarks to hockey, he went on to say that participation in our national sport is a great medium of physica. and character-building, In his "tips" on hockey, "Red! advised the youngsters against individualism, that as such they will not go far on their own efforts as much as they would as a co- operative and a "passing the puck" team, His final and imoressive words were "row go on the ice to a friendly, hard, strong, rugged and clean game - and keep your sticks down and your heads up, and pass~pass the puck", On behalf of his mates, Den Fedun thanked "Red" for his fine words of advice, It is with regret that the P,A, tac-~ ilities were not available for "Red! to talk to all as he is a great speaker, a talent Connie Smythe did not overlook when "Red" retired from active hockey, For two years after "hanging up his skates", "Red" was attached to the Toronto Maple Leafs as their Good Will Ambassador in going from hamlet to town to city to talk hockey to organizations and groups, The silver collection jars "under the eyes" of Jack Little and Billi Louk realized the generous sum of 547.43 towards the further promotion of Minor Hockey in Terrace Bay, As a fitting climax and end to Terrace Bay's First Annual Youth Honour Day of the First National YOUNG CANADA HOCKEY WEK, nearly 400 adults and children turned out (cont'd, page 5)
