JitGH SCHOOL COM ENCEMENT Terrace Bay High School held it's Commencement Exercises Tuesday evening, Oct. 30th in the Auditorium. Mrs, Eunice Wishart, Mayor of Port Arthur, was the guest speaker for the evening, and while not attempting to speak before the student body and parents, as Mr, Braun had last year, Mrs. Wishart continually stressed the point, we must not cease our efforts to improve ourselves and further our education. Voicing her admiration of the educational and recreational facilities offered in Terrace Bay, Mrs. Wishart. said it would seem a Utopia to those in im- provised surroundings, We could all become a little spoiled by:it and must therefore strive to do well showing appreciation to the community by greater efforts. She likened our life of today with the Parable of the Seven Fat Years, With improved working conditions and shorter working hours, an era of pushbutton living, we had more leisure time and must discipline ourselves to study accordingly, A lifetime could speed past us if we did not make the most of the present, A deplorable fact of today's standards is that only three percent of the national income is spent on education, less than is spent on costume jewellery for example, Even in 1931, four percent of the national income went for education, showing a definite downward trend today, In closing, Mrs. Wishart urged the class to go on with diligense,. so their future might be one of satisfaction. Dreaming is not enough for the student of today, Mr. C, &, Paget member of the school board, in introducing Mrs, Wishart, dese ceribed her as one of the outstanding women of our district, and expressed his apprec- iation of her trip to speak before this Terrace Bay audience, Chairman of the . School Board, Mr, Ed Cavanaugh was laster of Ceremonies, added his thanks to that of Mr. Paget's, Reverend E, A, Gallagher offered the Invocation at the beginning of the evening. In his Principal's Report, ir. Dave Locking, described the basic philosophy which governed the educational standards of an average class, and said it was most unfortunate that the minority group actually controlled the classroom. He felt they should not interfere with the good workmanship of the others and the class should not have to sacrifice for those of below normal abilities. Only by an honest endeavour could the majority (Cont. on next col,) Pege lL HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT (Cont. ) group overcome this handicap, ' Speaking of the year past in sports,,. Mr, Locking humorously admitted that Terrace Bay High had not won any further Trophies against schools in the surround- ing district, In fact they had actually lost the Trophies they previously held, all kit and kaboodle, It is still a small student body and with only thirty- -one boys enrolled, did not comprise very many teams although there certainly existed a fine team spirit amongst the students, Mr, Locking paid special tribute to the unpaid coaches who gave so readily of their time and energies, Miss Olyve Harrison, Messrs.
