CURLING CLUB NEWS The following is a brief account on the game of curling which should be of interest to all readers in general and all curlers and prospective curlers in particular. There is no doubt in the writers mind or any other active curlers mind that the game of curling is fast becoming Canadas number one winter activity for both young and old alike. Itis a highly comoetitive game and offers sociab- ility, a congenial atmosphere, and comrade- ship during the long winter months. Over the season curling will cost less than most, other sports, the only extra expend- iture ouside of club fees being the price of a broom, The game of curling was introduced into North America about two hundred years ago by Scotish Regiments stationed in Quebec city. "Until recently curling was played only to a small extent in some sections of Canada but during the last fifty years it has rapidly grown in prominence and popular favour spreading to every part of the continent, It has been estimated that there are about 200,000 curlers actively participating in the sport in Canada. Not so long ago Curling was considered to be a game which appealed only to the older people but the participation of the younger people has ~ proved this contention to be a fallacy, Not only may the game be played and enjoyed 'by young and old alike but iin thé compet- itive play of the present day bonspiel the young man has the advantage as in all competitive sports, Curling is something more than a game, It is a fraternal fellowship which stands unigue and unrivalled in the history of sport. «Through curling is established a common meeting ground of equality, good will, and mutual respect between the individual and his fellow men. ' Curling is outstanding among other games because it is a gentlemanly game in the true sense of the word, it affords one of the finest tests of individual character and is further distinguished from other games by the fact that it is based on Team Play and there is no professionalism, Unlike other games of the | individual in which a player stands or falls on his own effort curling depends on the united effort of every member of the team, the contribution of each player being equally important to success, Curling, a pressure game, offers all the thrills, suspense, tension and excite- ment in amounts great enough to satisfy the hunger of any participant or spectator, (Cont. on next col.) ' Club lounge, Page @ 'CURLING CLUB NEWS (Cont. ) This has been proven in recent years in club play, bonspiels, Macdonald Brier play and School boy championship play downs where \ thousands of spectators were thrilled by the play of Canada's finest curlers, "SHOTS FROM THE HACK" } The start of the curling season is only about a month away and since the end of last season considerable water has passed under the bridge. Since then a new club executive has been elected and have held two meetings which are worthwhile noting here as there was full attendance' atone meeting and one missing from the other. This" certainly shows that the present executive under the leadership of Curly Hale are figuring on a bang up season, It is hoped that we will have a good turn- out at the next meting of the general membership on October 15th in the Curling Important business which will effect all members will be discussed, Also this meeting will afford opportunity to any member to have his say on any bus- iness he may care to bring up. This should prove an interesting season, A tighter race for Club championship can be expected, Mr, Curler of Terrace Bay last year, Thor Olsen will not be curling this seaso., having left for the sunnier climes of old Mexico, Thor's rink won the squad curling last year and enjoyed a comfortable lead most of the season. .How- ever the next seven or eight teams in line were very close, only a few points separ- ating them. Thor will also be missed because he was an enthusiastic worker while in the club being a past president and a member of the executive for a number of: years. His leaving will leave a spot that will be difficult to fill Good Luck in Mexico. Thor}. Several old' ririke have been broken up, new ones willbe formed and it is anybody's guess who will be crowned Club Champ at. the end of the season, It is.a little early for predictions but in any case it should prove to be an interesting guessing game for the next few months, Watch the "News" for the. announcement of a special event to take place prior to the start of curling season Rune Ostling will be in charge of this event. An application for membership form is appearing elsewhere in this edition of the News. An invitation is extended to all of last years members and all perspective members to fill one out as directed and ' send it in as soon as possible, GENERAL MEETING - MON. OCT. 15 = 8:00 pems
