FIRS PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 7TH ~ 13TH - All Canada has been horrified by the number of child victims of fire, with one out of every five killed from this cause being under five years of age... The tragic toll may be greatly reduced by a few simple precautions taken by parents, according to Fire Chief George Maitland. During Fire Prevention Week, organizations throughout the country are attempting to emphasize fire safety. , "Never leave children home alone," Fire Chief Maitland declared, ."They're helpless to escape fire that they them- selves often start when left untended. By the same token, always keep matches and lighters far out of the reach of youngsters. These fire-builders are listed as two of the major causes of child fire deaths, "Be sure there are no fire hazards around the house which might ignite the children's clothing. Don't, allow them to play around. stoves where there are open flames; nor should they be allowed to play near the furnace. Outdoors, he wary of bonfires and field fires for this reason, For the child's sake, be sure party costumes and decoration are flame-proofed. You can make such material fire-retardant simply enough by adding nine ounces of borax and four ounces of boracic acid to one gallon. The protection lasts for six to twleve months. "Never give children candles; give them flashlights for Hallowe'en and other occasions, Teach your child to do the right thing if his clothes should ever catch fire; tell him not to rim but to lie dom at once and roll over slowly to smother the flames--in a rug, blanket or coat." 0-0-0, LAKEHEAD SPORTSMEN!S DINNER The Second Annual Lakehead Sportsmen's Dinner sponsored by the Central Committee of the Canadian Legion will be held in the Ex- 'hibition Coliseum, Fort William on Saturday, November 24th, 1956 at 6:00 p.m. This committee cordially invites any persons in Terrace Bay wishing to attend this Ginner, The fee will be $5.00 per plate and invitations are available thru John Jeanneret Leon Checkryn, Eldon Marostica or Murdo Camp~ belt. naan We have been advised that of this writing Vernon "Lefty" Gomez of baseball fame will be the guest speaker and added to the program will be Bill Petrolle the "Fargo Express" one time lightweight champ of the world, It is also expected that a football player and hockey: player will be included in the line of celebrities.
