iB A well attendea meeting was held on May 2lst at the Recreation Centre with Presi- dent Ken MacLeod presiding. At the conclusion of regular business, - reports were heard from Bob Hales and Stan Hodgkiss who were the club's delegates to the recent meeting at Red Rock, of the North- western Ontario Conservation Federation. Clem Lemay, as chairman of the re- stocking Committee announced that applic~ ations were being processed to re-stock two speckled trout lakes in our area this summer, Considerable work has been done in connection with a program of instruction, to be sponsored by the club, for boys 12 years and over, This project will be aimed at teaching the youngsters in our community the principles of conservation as well as some instruction in the practical aspects of fishing, hunting and woods and water safety. Bob Hales, as shairman of this project announced that a program had been laid out to start in June with in- structors to be called on from our membership, also that these programs were to be made available to the young-~ sters free of charge, Two welcome visitors from the Dept, of Lands and Forests, PaysPlat were also in attendance, Bert McGooey and Jim Scott. Mr. McGooey gave a short talk pointing out the necessity for burning and travel permits now that the fire season is upon us. Faust and P. E. Mazza, o=-0=0 CONSERVATION CORNER Two officers of the Ontario Provincial Police have been assigned to full-time duty to co-operate this swmmer with the Ont. Dept. of Lands and Forests in the most thorough probe of suspicious forest fires ever undertaken in this Province, The records of past years show that about 85% of these fires are man-caused, either through carelessness or deliberately. Under the new law enforcement set-up, arson in the bush is to be tracked down relentlessly and such crimes against the community and public safety punished severely, The Provincial Police Force will con- tinue to work with the Department as in the past but the two special constables have been relieved of all other duties to permit full-time attention to investigation of fires preparation of evidence against suspects and other work towards tracking down fire causes, Sergt. E. V. McNeill has posted Provincial Constable G, A, McMonagle to Kenora and Provincial Constable W. H. Moss to North Bay. Each has attended the series of meetings across the province held for summer woods operators and all others concerned with forest fire safety and has become familiar with Department staff and operation techniques, "Our main idea is to get at the cause of fires because only by knowing the cause can we eliminate these dangers," said T, E, Mackey, Chief of the Department's Division of Forest Protection, Sergt. McNeill has notified his staff: "These two special appointments do not in any change the existing policy pertaining to the investigation of forest fires, All personnel must continue to render every assistance and co-operation to authorities of the Dept. of Lands and Forests", HELP PREVENT FOREST FIRES
