At frequent intervals, pilots follow the shoreline from Sault' Ste. Marie to the Head of the Lakes, flying almost directly over the small har- bours and streams near which the pits have been found, Yet none has reported seeing 'them from the air. Now, however, they know what to look for and the Department of Lands and Forests is anxious to find out more about phe pits and cairns. Who built the cairns or pillars frankly puzzles Prof. McIllwraith, he admits. He photographed them and measured them and sent the results to experts in Copenhagen, since Norse relics were found at Beardmore, which isn't too far away, They reported that--there was nothing in Norse history to indicate that the Vikings had built anything like them, There is nothing in Canadian Indian culture to show that the early Indians built such pits, Nor is it likely that the Eskimo ever got that far south, They are not bonfire pits built by wandering tourists. They are much too large and few tourists ever have been along that rocky coast. Prof. McIllwraith thinks, but isn't sure, that they might have been built as long as 10,000 years ago, soon after the recession of the enormous ice cap which once covered this area, Prof, McIllwraith is sure they are not "defence" pits because of their location on the one-time beaches, Any native defend- ers would have been foolish, he thinks, to (Cont. on Tneoct cole) Page 3 ? IN SEARCH OF THE PAST (Cont.) build such defences where they could : have been attacked from the hills behind, Nor does he think it likely that they were built as duck or game hides or as smelting pits for the copper workers. who, many years ago, worked native deposits of copper into tools and weapons. Meanwhile, Department employees are being asked not to excavate or other- wise interfere with the pits or pillars, but simply to report their location. MacMillan says there may be many others along the shoreline and, farther back, perhaps still others in better repair. Those so far discovered have been mostly on exposed beaches free of vegetation. Are there more back in the vast areas of bushland, which have been so covered with growth that they haven't yet been seen? The Department's best "bush detectives" are now on the trail, o-0-0- KIWANIS DONATES FIRE PREVENTION SHIELD TO SEPARATE SCHOOL The Kiwanis Club presented Mr. Ray Kenney with a shield for fire prevention efficiency on Tuesday evening, This shield will be competed for each year during fire prevention week and will be won by the room which is most efficient at fire drill.
