RECIPE OF THE WEEK APPLESAUCE CAKE £ cup unsweetened applesauce i cup seedless raisins ge TNs ie 1/2 cup shortening (part butter) . _ 2 1/2 cups twice sifted Robin Hood Flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 4/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt ie teaspoon cinnamon ase teaspoon allspice 1/2 .. teaspoon nutmeg . i cup granulated sugar o egg Make applesauce, press through sieve and measure. Allow to stand until cool, Wash and thoroughly dry raisins. Measure shortening into mixing bowl. Allow to stand at room temperature to become soft. Grease and lightly flour an 8x8&x 2 inch cake tin Preheat oven to 350°F, (Moderate oven), Sift together twice sifted flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices, Sift again. Add raisins and mix lightly but well, Cream shortening until fluffy. Gradually add sugar, mixing until creamy, Beat egg until light. Add to creamed shortening and sugar mixture and beat together well, Add mixed dry ingredients and raisins alternately with applesauce, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Fold in gently after each addition, Turn into prepared cake tin, spreading batter evenly. Bake at 350°F, (Moderate oven) for 1 hour, Remove from oven and allow to stand in tin 5 minutes then tum out on wire cake rack to cool, When cold, frost, if desired, with Butter Frosting and sprinkle with chopped nuts, 0-0-0 Page 4 STORK CLUB Congratulations this week go to Mr. and Mrs. John Dawson on the birth of a son on August 23rd, 0-0-0 AROUND THE TOWN Hiith MacLoan, a nurse on the Hospital Staff for the past year, will leave Friday to reside in her home town of Charlottetown Prince Edward Island. Prior to her de- parture, a party was held by a group of her friends last Thursday evening at 161 Birch Crescent. Edith received a camera from her many friends attending, On Tuesday, Edith was also feted at a small Hospital party when Matron, Miss O'Brien presented her with a gift on behalf of the staff, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Shirriff with their family returned home last weekend from their three-week vacation to Billings, Montana where they wereguests of Bob's parents, Mr. and Mrs. F, N. Orchard, From Billings they travelled to Yellowstone Park and on-the return trip, visited with Mrs, Shirriff's relatives in South Dakota, Mrs. Shirriff's Father, Rev. Hellbusch returned with them to Terrace Bay froni Castlewood, South Dakota, and will visit :. here the next two weeks, Mrs. E. J. Burkett and son Craig arrived Tuesday from Morden, Manitoba to visit with her Uncle and Aunt, Mr. and Mrs, Malcolm Craig for the coming two weeks, Dorothy and Herb Williams arrived Wednesday from their home in East Templeton, Quebec to visit with Dorothy's sister, Bea and Herb's brother, Len Williams, Mrs. Don Anderson entertained last Wednesday afternoon, August 18th in honour of her son Kenny's fourth birthday, An outdoor birthday luncheon was enjoyed followed by an indoor party because of the sudden storm, Grandfather Alex Sinkins entertained the fourteen young guests with magic tricks, while Bett: and Mrs. Sinkirs entertained many of the mothers at tea. Treats and favours were given to each of ".- children before they left for home, Kenny < other grandparents, Mr, and Mrs. Oliver Anderson travelled down from Marathon to be present on the occasion, Gayle Sweet spent a week in Fort William as guest of Denise and Arlene Steele, previous to Denise visiting with Gayle in Terrace for the past week, (Cont. on Page 5)
