it A: TRUP TO. BURORE: (Gonta) ice oo. it ie large breaded veal cutlet to the Canadian) to the accompaniment of Auf Wiedersahen played by an accordian and violin orchestra, Thro! most of Germany we travelled on wide straight Autobahns built by Hitler, FINALE We entered Austria at Salzburg and crossed through a 150 mile Russian eccupa- tion zone by train (taking no chances hitching) into Vienna. This city for the past ten years has been divided into four zones of occupation French, British, American and Russian, but there are no barriers between the zones as in Berlin, We saw many "baggy panted" Russian soldiers enjoying the midway and strolling in the parks. Viennas famed Opera House restaur- ant archestras and symphonies are alive with the music of Johann Strauss who was inspired by the "blue" Danube, the Vienna Woods, the Beautiful Schoenbrunn Palate with its embroidered lawns, and the spirit of the city itself. Crossing down thro! the Austrian Tyrol we entered Italy thro' the Brenner Pass, spending a week end in the Italian Lakes and visiting La Scala Opera House in Milan, Continuing on we travelled along France's Cote dtAgur, thro! Marseilles into Spain, Having been offered a flat on the island of Majorca twelve miles out in the Med- iterranean we spent a wonderful week swim- aring and relaxing in the swum living on grapes at 6¢ a 1b, and tortillas (an omelette with pieces of ham cooked in it). At one cafe we ate octupus, a very tender pink meat with a delicate flavour. It took fifty hours of continuous trevel by boat and train to reach Gibralter, that. cosmopolitan gateway to the Mediterr- anean, We walked up to the top, having shown our passports at the entrance to a heavily guarded military area along the summit, where we were able to see the large harbour below and the great expanse of Mediterranean stretching to Spain and the misty mountains of Africa, Here we met the rock apes" swinging along the railings. is the saying goes -- "When the monkey dis- appears so will the British", you can - imagine that a good supply are kept on hand. Great areas of the sides of the Rock are smooth concrete channeled so as to divert the rain which is the main source of water supply in Gib. This was really the end of our travels for now we retraced our steps through Madrid, Paris and London and finally to (Cont. on next col.) Page 5 A TRIP TO EUROPE (Cont.) .. --. the "Maasdam" in Southampton. We were asked many questions about Canada and here are a few of the ideas the Europeans have about us. First and fore- most that Canada is cold, then that all Canadians speak French and English fluently (it wasn't long before they were disillus.. ioned about that). Some thought we were "owned" by Britain, others throught that we were part of "America", Several knew that Ottawa was the capital but few knew any cities excepting Montreal, 'And that about ended their conception of Canada! Of course they knew a great deal more than that before we had passed them by. I consider this trip' the greatest experience I shall probably ever have, It was much more than a holiday - it was a real education! For those of you who have a summer to spare I'm sure you'll find it as exciting, enjoyable and as interesting as Kath and I did. But don't be disillusioned if you can't find centrai. heating, bath tubs, refrigerators, and other Canadian luxuries. Make it your > purpose to enjoy the many things which Canada hasn't got. As for itinerary, put the British Isles at the top of your list, then Holland, Paris, Italy from tip to toe, Vienna if possible, with Switzerland as a must, Thanks to the Terrace Bay News for letting me relive my trip and I hope all of you have enjoyed reading these articles as much as I have writing them, 0-0-0 SHOE REPATR SHOP Shoe Repair Shop Hours starting July 10th to July 15th will be from pr to- 6:00 pm, The Shoe Repair Shop will be closed for holidays, from July 16th until August 7th.
