A TRIP TO EUROPE Nineteenth article in a series by Miss Margaret Laundy. : CORNWALL Cutting down the middle of the Corn- ish "toe" thro! Truro, we had lovely drives along poplar lined roads, ivy covered walls and holly trees. We stopped at Marazion at one time called the™Market of the Jews" because traders from the Holy Land brought their merchandise here to sell, This was where Joseph of Arimathia landed bringing with him the chalice of the Last Supper, "The Holy Grail", whose story is woven into the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Across from Marazion lies St. Michael's Mount, steep and rocky, surmounted by a large castle where Jack the Giant Killer was supposed to have performed his bold deed, At high tide it is completely surrounded by water but at low the sand flats stretch from the beach to the island, Penzance further along the coast is a seaside resort with wide sandy beach and promenade lineiwith palms. This southern coast with its subtropical growth is Brit- ain's "Riviera", We crossed a flat treeless plain to Lands End, a very rocky rugged jut of land which is Britain's most westerly tip and thus the "End", Just a mile north of here sits a lovely little Cove with a white granite beach, the houses of Sennen built up the steep sides of the Cove, Daffodil gardens are tiered up the north most pro- tected side. Two friends of Kath's mother live in a small bungalow with a red roof named "Dracaema" after a palm growing in their front yard. Here we spent four enjoyable days overlooking the sea and breathing that good old salt air, Everyday they took us on different trips usually taking a picnic lunch, St. Ives, a picturesque fishing village with narrow colourful streets is noted for its artists colony. Mousehole is another quaint fishing village earning its name by the fact that the cove is accessible only by one small. road thro! the surrounding cliffs, At low tide the.colourful fishing boats sit right on the sand flats, In Newry we stopped for tea at "The Smugglers Cove", a very atmospheric little shop filled with fishing nets, ships bells lobster pots and old mops, Ever since arriving in this part of England we had seen advertisements of "cream teas" so decided that this was our opportunity to try one, Well it consisted of hot homemade (Cont. on next col.) Page 5 A TRIP TO EUROPE (Cont.) scones, butter, strawberry jam and thick dotted Cornish cream (on the scone in that order) = not to mention a big pot of tea, And boy was it delicious! Back at Sennen Cove we went swimming in that icy ocean - just once - it was almost as cold as Lake Superior} Kath, buffeting the waves, opened her mouth at an inopportune moment and suffered that sea salt taste for two days afterwards. On the shore two boys were cutting the sand with long hooks scooping up eels, Leaving the coast we crossed through Bodmin and Bodmin Moor, where some of Eng~ land's best china clay is found, The clay dumps were visible for miles because of their whiteness, Further on we came to Dartmoor, no bracken or heather or trees just rolling hills covered with coarse grass, One road led off to famous Dart- moor Prison. Right in the center of that Moorland was Jamaica Inn, that notorious smuggler's hangout, It was a very grey, weatherbeaten Inn with slate front and roof, leaded windows, and high grey stone fence surrounding it. Above the road hung a sign swinging creakingly in the wind with a picture of a wild looking pir- ate with a black patch over one eye. There was no sign of life for miles around, j 0-0-0 HOE DOWN CLUB Our crowds are getting better all the time. We had seven sets on the floor at one time at our last Hoe Down.
