PLAYGROUND FAREWELL PATTER This wonderful, warm, busy summer is now being heralded by autwm and so the Playground is being packed away after its first season. And "it was an exciting, busy stimulating summer at the Playground. Because it was in its infancy there were headaches, disappointments and frustrations, Many things we had to discover by trial and error, However we are leaving, not without some sense of satisfaction, happy memories, and a feeling of achievement, A good opportunity to see what had been achieved was available last Thursday morning. A large number of the children ~ were gathered at the Auditorium of the Con- tinuation School for the Playground Farewell,' The program was extended for an hour to give the visitors a chance to see the various activities in progress, 'The children under seven had a play period on the apparatus; rope, hoop, bean-bag and ball activities; games; tumbling and a handicraft period, Those from eight to twelve had games, rope activities, We were well pleased with the response to our invitation to come and visit us that day. The weather was adverse, but the number of interested parents and friends who came 'was heart-warming and showed you really are interested, My personal thanks to you for this interest which is the factér in success of any kind. The volunteers we had helping us this summer showed much of this interest; they were a wonderful group of people. It has been a real pleasure to work with Charmaine Dodge. I also have greatly appreciated the efforts of the Townsite men in putting,up, taki, down and repairing so much of our equipment when they were very busy,' There are others too: those who painted our posters, those. who put them in their stores, the men who drove the cars and the people who loaned us records 'and even good advice when things became a little rough. All of you have contributed mors than you know. During the past cight weeks the children have been introducéd to somé new games and renewed acquaintance with others, These included basket-b:11, quoits, volley- ball, tether-brll, and soft-ball. Many new group games became quick favorites of all ages and we have, in August, had the opportunity to pursue some crafts, This included plaster of paris pictures and figurines, a large drip candle, sewing, (Cont. on next col.) bassact-ball and handicrafts. ", board, crayon scratch pictures, clay ~~ 4 modeling, spatter-painting, crayoning, painting, charcoal drawing, spool dolls, paper-bag masks, ° 'spurs, snow-flakes, cutting out and pasting. We featured a number of special events this summer also. For they are the seasoning of any program, There were two hikes each for the older boys and girls and a hike for the six and seven year boys. We had our animated Pet Parade : at the first of the season and a Doll and Stuffed Animal Parade at the end of August Wheels Day was a gay and colorful event. In addition the members of the Playground went to Jackfish, to Rossport and through the Mill, We had scavanger Hunts, dancing, First-Aid instruction, sing-songs and Com Trails as well as a picnic for the younger children, All of these things provided a great d2al of healthy, educational and interesting FUN! We are reminded that. . Joseph Lee, Playground originator, said: "If the boy does not do daring things and does. not measure himself against other boys in games and contests, he will never grow to be a man, The chance onee missed will never come back to him, That is why our system of education must include an |. opportunity for the doing of difficult and dangerous feuts. Tiddliwinks is a good game but the real moral food of boyhood is made of sterner stuff," So on that note we.will say farewell | from the Playground for this Years, 30 ., long, it's been good to know youl o-0-0 STORK CLUB Extra Special congratulations 'this week go to Mr. and Mrs. Nick Chopty on the birth of twin daughters on August 31st. 0-0-0 LAST DAY AT SWIM POOL MONDAY (Cont+) writing, there are some thirty-five pupils who have passed their Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Tests, with a few more to be examined or re-examined by this week-end, A complete list of names of the successful candidates will appear in next week's "News", 0-0-0
