TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT Please use receptacles of some kind, whenever possible, when putting out rubbish, leaves, etc,, for pick-up by the garbage trucks, This little extra efforf will make 45 just that much faster for the crews to do their work and so we will all get rid of our rubbish faster, 0-0-0 LEARN THE CAUSES OF FIRE AND PREYENT THEM ' Pago 7 {HE GUNNERS' COLUMN } Mr, Abbott's budget speech is history ~ now, but at that time the item that concern- ed most people was, how much of a bite will be taken from their pay cheque, Others would delve deeper into it and wonder about the $1,664,000,000,00 for defence purposes, This figure, of course, includes all of the armed forces Experimental and Research Lab- oratories, Just for a moment let's look into the requirements of an Anit-Aircraft Regiment, Every piece of Ordnance, that is,a gun, is a highly technical piece of achievement that costs in the neighbourhood of $60,000.00 to $80,000.00, and when you consider that there are quite a few in each regiment, this item alone can add up to a pretty heavy figure, ~ In addition to this, you can go on interm- inably listing all of the auxilliary items necessary to put these guns into service, such as: vehicles for towing guns, trucks for troop transportation, motor cycles, wireless sets and a myriad of other neces- sary pieces of equipment, Also to be con-= sidered, are the personnel themselves and the amount of dollars required to pay, arm, train, feed and maintain in the field is astounding, To pick a controversial figure of about $5,000,000,00 to operate one Ack Ack Regiment, would give you an idea of where your tax dollars are going. £t a recent local parade we had a dis-= cussion about a surprise attack on Canada by an enemy, The general concensus of opinion was that we do not have too many regular Army units at present and that the Reserve Army would not be effective enough to do much about it. It is quite evident that the Reserve Army is not up to strength and that it is our job to rectify this sit- uation, Let's not have the same old, old story - Too little and too late, All plans are in readiness for the scheme on Sunday, so let's have a real good turnout and make this practise well worth -- while, ' o-0-0 SCHOOL FIRE DRILL IS HELD A surprise fire drill was held at the Terrace Bay School on Friday, May llth.
