Antonia, however, has become consumptive and so frail that she has been forbidden to sing, end Hoffman entreats her to sing no more, Antonia hesitantly agrees, Doctor Miracle, a hypnotist and spirit of evil, suddenly appears, urging Antonia to sing, and, in order to further his scheme, brings back from the grave the soul of her mother who persuades Antonia that it is her duty to use her great gift. Antonia sings, but the-effort is too much for her and, as the vision of her mother and the evil doctor disappear in the shadows, Antonia dies.
