Page 4 CURLING NEWS The Curling Season enced March 22nd with a bang-up club bonspiel. This 'spiel was open to any member of the club who wished to enter a rink. and though only 8 rinks were entered it was a close battle for all. The rinks were skipped by Ernie Haight, Jack Wellings, Ed Pineault, Bill Baillie, Jim Duncan, Runie Ostling, Malcolm Craig and Paul Boudreau. Two events were run off and the 'spiel ended as follows: winners of the main event with the coveted Hudson's Bay trophy going to the winners - Malcolm Craig's rink with Ted McInnes - third, Bob Sheppard - second and Albert Farrow - leads Runner-up in main event - Ernie Haight's rink with Lorne Woodard - third, Jack Johnson - second' and Walter Gabrielson as lead, Winners of the Consolation event - Ed Pineault's rink with Jim MacDonald - third, Gordon Keeley - second and Jim (Curly) Hale as lead, Runner-up in Consolation event - Jack Wellings' rink with Bill Geiger - third, Peggy Wellings - second and Irene Edmonds as lead, The Club Championship, with the Imperial Bank Trophy at stake was won after a hard fought battle by Ed Pineault's rink with Jim Duncan as third, Gordon Keeley as second and Jim Hale as lead. Runner-up in Club Championship ~- Runie Ostling's rink with Elsie Ostling as third, Albert Farrow as second and Ken McKay as lead, The play-offs for the Imperial Bank trophy caught the interest of the whole club even though many of them did not stand a chance after the second round. Runie Ostling's four held a substantial lead about half way through the second round and it was felt that they were home free. However, in the third round in which Ed Pineault had four games to play and Runie Ostling had three, Pineault surged ahead and the third round ended with Ostling and Pineault tied with 14 wins each for the season, This meant a sudden-death game was necessary which was played on Wednesday, March 8th and from which Pineault emerged victorious, The Annual Banquet and presentation of prizes will be held around the middle of April. Watch for the date to appear on these pages and have your money ready for those ticket sellers, o-0-0 TOWN TID BITS Believe it or not - on Tuesday, March 28th at 7:35 pm. a strange sight was observed by 4 members of the Mohawk Club. While proceeding towards the Theatre, one of the members in excitement cried "Look"!3 pointing toward the sky. To their astonishment the small group saw a strange object that resembled a "Flying Saucer", It seemed to be about the size of a 10 pin bowling ball, turquoise in colour with a sort of an orange-yellow tail streaking behind it, It flashed across the sky for about 5 sec- onds, disappearing into the clouds heading north-west, As Bob Ripley would say, "Believe / it or Not", They saw it. dj New Arrivals: Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Turner on the birth of a son in McKellar Hospital, Fort William, Mother and son both doing well. Mr. And Mrs, Verne Walker now have a daughter to keep them company, Mrs. Walker is the former Donna Dumas of Personnel Department. Note: All those who had bets placed on this event are asked to line up in single file on the third floor of the Bleachery for the pay-off, It is believed that all of those persons who patronized the bus this past winter will agree that our amiable and ever courteous driver, Harold Klahn is doing a job that is certainly worthy of special thanks, Through blizzards and slush alike, Harold has always managed to get through on time and is never hesitant about making the odd little stop here and there or to wait the few seconds extra which often means the difference between a long, cold walk or being late and getting to your destination on time in comfort.
