Volume 4, No. 9 LARGEST CIRCULATION IN TERRACE BiY ' March 3, 1949 i TERRACE BAY'S FIRST SAFETY CONTEST UNDERWAY Terrace Bay's first Safety Contest which will run for 2 three month period ending at 8:00 p.m. June Ist got underway last Tuesday. For the purpose of the Contest all LongLac employces have been grouped into five units as indicated under "Safety Contest Rules" which are published elsewhere in this paper, The Contest Committee decided to break down the salaried group amd allocate a ccrtain number of salaricd employees to each of the mill units, in order to elininate the need of entering a salaried group as © scparate unit which generally causes some concern on the part of those who consider that mill jobs are perhaps more hazardous than office work, At the close of the contest 3150,00 will go to the winning unit and the money will be spent of distributed by way of prizes according to the decision of the Safety Committee of the winning unit, For the sake of simplicity in the contest only on duty lost-time accidents will be recorded and the winning unit will be determined by the frequency rate which is the one standard method of compiling lost-time accidents, Unit Committees consist of the following members: ~- Pulp Dept. and Hotel - Bill Covington, Chairman; Rollie Scowen; Henry Smith; Harold Hall; Albert Cadiux; Keith Adams (Hotel) Wood Handling and General Office - Ron Faust, Chairman; Cliff Knauff; Hector MacLeod; Beggie Thorsticnsen; John Platzer; Rey Willioms (Generel Office) Stcam, Construction and Hospital - John Holancin, Chairman; Ed Lallarche; John Knight; Miclcolm Craig; Harold McKetchnie Maintenance and Miscellancous Office - John Garvin, Chairmen; Jack Wellings, Bill Sadowich; Geo, Savoy; Jim Duncan Services, Technical and Personnel Office - Bill Baillic, Chairman; Bob Middaugh; John Grahan; Harry Coe; Art liercure The Contest Connittee consists of John Holancin - Chairman; John Garvin, Bill Covington, Bill Baillie, Ron Faust, Joe Wig and Art Gobeil, 0-0-0 PLANS LAUNCHED FOR COMMUNITY RECRE..TION PROGRAM AT TERRACE BAY Despite the fact that Thursday evening, Feb. e4th was one of the worst nights of the winter, between 150 and 175 Terrace Bay residents attended a meeting at the Recreation Hall which had been called for the purpose of discussing a Community Recreation Program. Chairman of the meeting was the Lill Manager, Day Porvex, who outlined bricfly the reasons for the development of a Recreation &ssociation or Recreation Committee which would co-ordinate recreational activities in the community as well as foster juvenile and teen-age programs, assist new activities to organize, determine ains of a long term progran, guide clubs whose status might be waivering and develop recreational facilities for residents of the Gormitories. The meeting was then turned over to H, C. Laundy who outlined the pert which had been played by the Company to date in providing a part-time Reereettion Director who took the responsibility for supervising equipment, grounds, and promoting various activities which had resulted in the clubs, organizations and facilities Geveloped to date. tir, Laundy stated also that it was now considered desirable that the entire recreation program should be developed by an overall committee. Prior to general discussion, 4 Provisional Committee was set up which consisted of a representative from cach of the recreational groups developed to date at Terrace Bay, in addition to which a ledy representative from the commnity was chosen, also a represent- ative from community organizations or businesses apart from the Longlhac Pulp and Peper Co. A representative from the local union, and a representative of the LongLac Pulp and Paper Company are to be added to the committee. Members of the Provisional Committee then took sects at the front of the hall with D. C. Porter outlining the following four points as a basis for consideration of the subject by those present: 1.
