The flow of the Aguasabon into Lake Superior was thereby blocked and the waters of the river will now flood an area to the north and west of the dan, creating a water storage basin of approximately 4.1 square miles. The water from this "Blue Jay Basin" will ultimately drop vertically 270 feet through a concrete lined shaft and will then flow throughahorizontal tunnel a distance of 3400 feet to a steel penstock 15 feet in diameter, through which it will travel another 100 feet to a "Y¥". From this point it will divide into two streams to feed two generating units which are now being installed in the powerhouse. The two generating units will have an output of 55,000 h.p. Speaking at a brief ceremony which marked the closing of the gates in the dam, Robert H. Saunders, Chairman of the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario stated that the occasion was "one of the really important milestones in the history of Northern Ontario" and was "striking evidence of what can be done by cooperation between a private enterprise and a public utility". Mr. Saunders also noted that another important factor of the Aguasabon Power Project was the fact that some 38,000 h.p. will flow back into the Thunder Bay power system when the project is completed. In expressing his appreciation for the cooperation of the LongLac Pulp and Paper Company, Mr. Saunders quoted a remark made recently by the Hydro Superintendent of the Aguasabon project, Mr. Charles L. Hayes, to the effect that "never in my long experience have I enjoyed such cooperation as has been given by LongLac officials", Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the LongLac Pulp end Paper Company and Kimberly- Clark Corporation, of which he is Assistant Vice-President, Mr. C. W. Nelson stated that he was thrilled beyond words at the climax reached today ana noted that with the closing of the getes in the dam a new era was beginning in this area where an entire new community was being built around a river, Mr. Nelson paid. warm tribute to the "men of Hydro headed by Charles Hayes for their grand neighbourlinesdg', In addition to Mr. Saunders, other Hydro officials from Toronto who were present at the ceremony included: Dr, Otto Holden, Assistant General Manager of Engineering and David Forgan, Director of Construction. Closing of the gates commenced at 9:15 a.m. and by 10:25 a.m. both gates were in place and the Aguasabon had ceased to flow beyond the dam. - Q-0-0 DR. J. O.
