Description
We were delighted to discover that the quote, "If you persevere and refuse to give up, you can
accomplish your goals in the end", was by none other than Theodor Seuss Geisel, better
known as Dr. Seuss.
After some texting back and forth about favourite Seuss books, it was decided that two books
stood out for us as best representations of the quote. Everyone got their 'two cents' worth in
the discussion about "Horton Hears a Who" and "Horton Hatches the Egg”. These stories both
involve a very dedicated, caring elephant named Horton, who never gives up, persevering to
accomplish a goal. For us, Horton hatching his vacationing bird friend’s egg was the best
choice. In the book, Horton says, “I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant’s
faithful one hundred percent!”, and faithful he is. Unfortunately, Maisie the bird does not return.
He perseveres in sitting on that egg through thunder-, snow-, and sleet storms, being hunted,
teased, taunted, captured, moved and relocated through New York to a circus of all places.
The absent Maisie returns just as the egg hatches an……..elephant bird, Horton’s reward!
So here we are in Orleans, Ontario at the Ottawa Public Library, Cumberland Branch at the Ray
Friel Recreation and Civic Centre. Celebrating a much loved author in the very place where
children will hear this story.
And so WISH directors, thanks for the fun,
We’ll sign off with a Seuss quote, another one: (From “Oh the Places You’ll Go”)
“Oh the places you’ll go, there’s fun to be done. There are points to be scored. There are
games to be won. You have brains in your head, feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any
direction you choose.”
