CENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE The Centennial Planning Committee started in March of 1966 to arrange their various projects for the Centennial Celebrations. The First meeting was held in the Schreiber High School and was chaired by Mrs.Inez McCuaig. Representatives from all organizations in the community attended. An Old Home Re-Union was planned to take place from July 1st to July 3rd,with all citizens contributing. Schreiberites were asked to place a sign on their gates with their names on it to enable former citizens to locate old friends and neighbours. Of course the Centennial Costume was a MUST in attire. "Portraits Of The Past" held on December 8th, 1966 was held in the Schreiber High School Auditorium with Mrs. Phyllis McParland running a commentary as each lady so ably and proudly walked down the ramp depicting the story of Canada since early days wearing the lovely and beautiful gowns of each period. Another event ,was the ceremony on December 20th, marking the installation of the ice plant in the Schreiber Arena. This project was started by a committee of interested citizens. Funds were raised by generous donations and public support. Another project carried out for Centennial year,was the Inter-Faith Service on January 20th,1967 in the High School Audit orium when hundreds of citizens attended. The clergymen of all the Schreiber Churches conducted the service and the Terrace Bay Male Choir was in attendance. The New Year baby played an important part in the celebrations. The Women's Institute sponsored a party for the first baby born in 1967 who happened to be Christopher,infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Borutski. The W.I. Members also invited all former New Year babies and their mothers to this party.The town council presented the New Year baby with an engraved silver mug and the other babies with a Cent-enn ial spoon. The Women's Institute contributed to many events marking Centennial year. They sponsored a tea fallowing the unveiling of the Historical Plaques,they presented the students from each of the two elementary schools who were promoted to Schreiber High School with the highest standing with a fifteen dollar scholarship. This organization hopes to continue this scholarship each year as long as thev are able. Improvements were made on the town library. This library was established in 1891 and has had many boards and librarians. Owing to the large circulation of books among borrowers and students on research a larger space was made to accommodate the books required. Centennial Park was created where the YMCA stood and the cenotaph was placed there. The Women's Institute and the Rebacka Lodge placed benches in this park. The King and Queen for Centennial projects were Mr. and Mrs. M McCoun with the Prince and Princess being Miss Nancy Spillane and Frank Commisso. The eldest living citizen of Schreiber in 1967 was Mrs. Agnes Sully. The new subway was built in 1966 for Centennial Year and two Historical Plaques unveiled to commemorate Sir Collingwood Schreiber and The Lake Superior Trek of 1895. The former was unveiled bv Mrs. Lousie Corbett and the latter by Mrs. J. D. Bryson, were placed in the park. by Mrs. Anne Todesco, W.I. Curator.
