LORD TWEEDSMUIR Lord Tweedsmuir was born John Buchan in Scotland,August 25th,, 1875. He was the son of Reverend John Buchan. He was called to the Bar in 1901. He was a noted historian and novelists He was the author of a number of biographies and historical works. Among them were "Sir Walter Raleigh ","Sir Walter Scott ", "Julius Caesar11, "Oliver Cromwell" "The Massacre of Glencoe",and "The King's Grace". Some of his novels were,"The 39 Steps","Salute to Adventures",, and "The Three Hostages". One of his latest works was his autobiography, Memory Hold the Door". He was the Governor-General of Canada from 1935- I940, He was a member of the British House of Commons for the Scottish Universities from I927 to 1935. John Buchan,the first Lord Tweedsmuir,died in Montreal,Canada on February 11th,I940. He bequeathed his library to Queen's University at Kingston,Ontario. Lady Tweedsmuir Lady Susan Tweedsmuir,wife of our Governor-General,was born in England. She wrote many plays,children's books and reminiscences. She was an ardent Women's Institute member in England and an Honourary Life Member of the F.W.I.O. She advocated that our organization across Canada compile the histories of our local communities and villages. She unveiled a plaque in memory of Mrs. Adelaide Hood-less in 1937. She presented cups for three competitions. She returned to England following the death of her husband and is still residing there. (i962)
