Mr. Erland Lee Mr.Erland Lee was secretary of South Wentworth Farmer's Institute. Each year this organization held a Ladies' Night but only for entertainment such as a piano or vocal solo. The guest speaker was always a man as the members maintained that the women's place was in the home. However Mr. Lee managed to have Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless as guest speaker in 1897 when she outlined a women's part in improving her lot in the home and community. Mr. Lee managed to both liberate the women and pull a coop over his chauvinist colleagues. Thus Mr. Lee was involved in the forming of the Women's Institute. At first it was known as "The Women's Department of the Farmer's Institute" and then finally became the Women's Institute of Stoney Creek February I9th,I897. By Mrs. Anne Todesco, W.I. Curator.
