ELINOR O'CONNOR ------------------- A life member of the Schreiber Women's Institute r,nd other organizations such as her church' Ladies Aid,the Red Cross,the Cancer Society,the Lady Fireman,and the YMCA bowling team. Elinor was born and raised in Rossport and reached her 94th birthday this year of 1985. She lives alone in her own home,does her own housework and has a vivid memory of the years as they rolled by. Her life time takes in her young years at Rossport and her married life in Schreiber. Her parents came to Rossport in the 1860's. They purchased the big house opposite the hotel from a Mr. Neal. Her father was pumpman at Rossport and Gravel River where supplied water for the steam locomotives*Her mother ran a boarding house at Rossport.She thought nothing about feeding 50 men three times a day besides baking 50 loaves of bread a day plus pastries and puddings. There were 10 children in the family,eight girls May,Elinor,. Nettie, Agnes,Rubie ,Mable,Margarite and Myrtle and two sons Edger and Jack, Everyone pitched in and helped with the work from cutting wood to housework.Elinor's job was theclean,cut up about 60%,pounds of fish and cook it. The food was all piled on the table everyone helped themselves.Besides the fish,there would be beef and pork as well as smoked ham. Elinor smiled when she related that the meal cost 50 to 75 cents and you could eat all you desired. At the time of the sinking of the yacht Gunilda,the crew and guests and owners aboard at the time of the disaster when the yacht ran on to the McArvey Shoal known locally as OLE MAN'S HUMP Mrs. 0'Conner's mother took on the feeding of them.They were amazed
